Johanna A. Maatman
February 27, 1932 – November 21, 2023
Johanna Maatman (Mom/Oma) went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on November 21, 2023.
Mom was born and raised in the Netherlands. She married Dad in 1955 and immigrated to Canada. They settled in Saskatchewan and in 1963 bought a dairy farm where they raised their family for 20 years. Mom was very involved in the day to day operations on the farm. After moving to Saskatoon in 1983, they continued grain farming and grew gladiolas. After 59 years of marriage, Dad passed away and Mom eventually moved to her condo in Elim.
Mom had a strong faith and was passionate about Bethel Christian Reformed Church and Saskatoon Christian School. Mom loved to cook and bake, garden, knit and crochet, read, watch nature and game shows, sing hymns and listen to organ music, and puzzle. Mom was an extrovert and loved people; she liked to make people feel at home and she had a great sense of humour. She was charming but also had strong opinions and was not afraid to voice them.
The family would like to thank all the home care aides that helped Mom over the last few years; many of you did your job with compassion and made Mom feel so loved. Thank you to all the medical staff; Mom spent time in all three hospitals over the last few months. A special thanks to Dr. Cassie Fleury, Mom’s neurologist after her recent stroke. Glengarda Hospice was where Mom spent her final week; we are so grateful for their care and their kindness. Most of all, our family wants to thank Glennda Maatman, Mom’s favourite daughter-in-law, for her expertise, kindness and care for Mom.
Mom is survived by her children: Wilma (John Marissen), Henny, Doreen (Peter Mosterd), John and Paul (Glennda); grandchildren: Brandy (Chris Dieno) and Angela; Stephanie (Lance) and Dustin; Peter (Lisa), Jarret (Candice), Daniel (Tarren), Rebecca (Peter Devries), Zoey and Jazlyn; Tristan; Melissa (Mickey) and Darcy (Brooke); great-grandchildren: Carrie-Anne, Phaedra, Aaron, Titan, Lillian, Elizabeth, Abigail, Noah, Nathan, Madison, Brooklyn, Asher, Christopher, Isabelle, Ziva, Kingston and two on the way. Mom is also survived by our “adopted family”: Art and Ineke Rekman, Nikki (Mark Klein), Tracy (Jay Santha), Renee (Brian Jones), Levi (Tarah), Liam, Quinn, Grayson, Jaxon, Milo, and by extended family in Holland. Mom was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sister in laws in Holland, by our dad, John Maatman, son-in-law Theo Maatman, grandsons Chris Mosterd and Steven Marissen, and grandson-in-law Paul Snell.
The Funeral will take place on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Bethel Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Rafik Kamel officiating. Viewing is at 10:30 a.m. and the Funeral is at 11:00 a.m., followed by a lunch at the church. To watch the live stream please click on the link below.

our thoughts and prayers with family , we have wonderful memories of Johanna and her family going back to the early 1960 ,
Generous , Welcoming ,Humorous , willing to listen , willing to give , and lived her belief in her Savior . I have many wonderful memories of Tante Johanna and of all the times her and uncle Johny (and Paul) put up with us at the farm. I truly am sorry for your families loss

Johanna and my mom Adrie were blessed with a close kinship as they served the Lord at the Saskatoon Christian school . Lots of laughter, reminiscing and friendship made a strong bond. May you the family and all her friends be blessed with many wonderful memories that will bring you much Joy and peace.

I had the honour of helping out both your dad John, and your mom Johanna, in my role as a care aid with Home Care, your dad was a gentleman, and your mom was a true lady with a great sense of humour, and a joy for living. I was reminded of her yesterday when searching the bottom of my purse and found a roll of “church food” she had given me. I am sorry for your family’s loss, but I know that she loved you all very much, and I hope that the good memories ease the pain of grief.

I don’t have enough words to summarize all that your Mom meant to us:the talks as we gardened; the amazing hospitality; (Mike used to suggest she should start ‘Johanna’s Kitchen baking’);_just a few examples. I’m so thankful that we still kept up contact. We stillcalled for her birthday and she called for Gerald’s birthday until his very last one in 2022. And our relationship was always one where we just picked up where we left off. And the bond was so profound because of our shared faith.And now she”has fought the good fight and kept the faith and she has arrived where all her questions are answered. I pray that God will surround you all with his presence as you grieve the loss of this most remarkable lady. One of the quotes that I have found to be profound is,”Grieving is the price you pay for loving someone.” May god be very near ro you all.

Dear Maatman family,,
Johanna will be dearly missed by each of you. I remember our childhood visits to the farm and so enjoyed spending time with her in the kitchen. I still bake many of her recipes ; especially her yellow sponge cake recipe when a mocha cake is called for. And of course the mocha cream she would use. Lots of laughter and conversations when we all decorated and made chocolates for Christmas together too! Or the time I just about sent the pressure cooker off when I didn’t put the whistle on just right. She wove her faith into the time spent together. She was very much a benediction in the lives of many and am feel blessed to have known her and call her Tante.
May happy memories of her be your companions as you journey your lives without her presence here. Much love to you all.
Johanna and Johnny made the five years from 1983 – 1988 that we spent in Saskatoon pioneering the Christian School very special. Without heir support, friendship, and encouragement made our work would not have been sustainable. We were blest to have been able to have a good visit with Johanna during the fall of 2022 reminiscing about all the ways the Lord had led in our lives. We extend our sincere condolences to the entire extended family at this time. She will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered.
I was going through some papers looking for a recipe today, and found the recipe handout that Johanna shared with us one night at a cooking class in Aberdeen in the 70s. Watergruwel and Hachee are two family favourites, so it may please you to know that Johanna is still remembered fondly, even though I only met her once.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Joe always enjoyed the days he picked up milk from the farm. And Mom, Marjorie van Seters, enjoyed the hours spent after church or meeting for coffee.
Mrs. Maatman (how I will always think of her) was a kindness in my life that brought me a joy (obsession?) for knitting and croquetten. I have such fond memories of her food, laughter, and the sound of her voice. Blessings to you all as you navigate this time.
Thank you Doreen for your words today at the service. You brought back many fond memories of your mom for me. Condolences to you, your sisters and brothers as well as the entire extended family. I just wish that I could have been there in-person but am grateful for the Zoom link.

Bij deze willen wij ons mede leven betonen bij het overlijden van moeder/oma Maatman.
Wij herinneren ons haar als een warme , hartelijke en goed lachte vrouw.
Met een grote belangstelling voor de mensen om haar heen. En heel gastvrij.
Bij de dienst zag ik een boeket met gladiolen. Toen ik dit zag moest ik denken aan het volgende tafereel:
We zaten in de kerk in Saskatoon Net voor de dienst begon ging de deur open en Johanna Maatman kwam binnen met een enorme bos gladiolen en deze werden in de daarvoor klaar gezette vaas gezet.
Ze zei nog net niet “ Zo, dat is dat”
Na die tijd, En nu nog steeds moet ik bij het zien van gladiolen denken aan Johanna Maatman.
Jullie zullen haar enorm missen maar hebben ook heel veel herinneringen gemaakt samen en dat is heel waarde vol.
en we wensen jullie veel sterkte bij het verwerken van dit gemis en jullie zijn in onze gebeden.

Wij vonden de uitvaart erg mooi gedaan, de foto’s het levens verhaal verteld door Dorien, de gekozen liederen en muziek. Nogmaals heel veel sterkte allemaal en vooral heel veel mooie en goede herinneringen.

As I knew her, Tante Johanna, was my Canadian grandmother. Our family often visited at the farm but I really connected with after school when they moved off the farm. Being a block away from our house we (my younger sister and I) would spend time there playing board games and help baking and decorating zandgebakjes and many other delicious treats. Truly a grandmother to me.
