Robert (Bob) “Hook” Mathieu
June 27, 1940 – September 25, 2026
Robert was born to Henry and Sarazine Mathieu on June 27, 1940, in Meadow Lake, SK, the second youngest of seven children. He was predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings.
In 1960, Robert met the love of his life, Joyce. The two were married in 1961, building a life together and raising their two sons, Michael (Mick) Mathieu and Barry Mathieu. Robert was a man of remarkable grit and resilience; having lost his left hand, he wore a hook earning him the affectionate, well-known nickname “Hook”. He never let it slow him down for a single day. A dedicated provider, he spent more than fifty years working in water and sewer and the oil and gas industries, taking immense pride in hard, honest work.
Besides his deep love for his family, Robert had a true passion for golf. He spent most of his free time out on the course, whether he was playing a round or wandering the rough on the hunt for lost golf balls. Over the decades, that sharp-eyed pastime turned into an astonishing collection numbering in the tens of thousands.
In 1986, Robert proudly became a grandfather for the first time, welcoming a total of nine grandsons over the years. His pride only multiplied as the family grew to include twelve great-grandchildren (eight girls and four boys). In his later years, nothing brought him more joy than watching them play hockey and other sports, proudly cheering from the sidelines. Robert was a genuinely happy man who carried a bright spirit wherever he went, always ready with a warm smile, an easy laugh, and an endless supply of corny jokes.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff and caregivers at Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny, SK. The care, love, and compassion he received from each of you was truly exceptional- you are earthly angels.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held Thursday, October 8, 2026 10:00 a.m. at Dalmeny Community Church, 121 4th St., Dalmeny SK.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dalmeny Spruce Manor Special Care Home.
