Katie Voth Wiens
February 20, 1929 – July 17, 2026
Our lovely Mom, Grandma and Oma – Katie Wiens – slipped peacefully into eternity on July 17, 2026, at St. Paul’s Hospital. She spent her last week surrounded by her family and firmly wrapped in love. Mom’s long life was characterized by a gentle spirit, a generous outreach to her community, and a keen and active involvement in the lives of her family.
Mom was born in Windsor, Ontario on February 20, 1929. She was part of a large and close family and her connection to her eastern family was always strong. The Voth family moved around a lot looking for adequate employment to support their existence. Mom spoke with particular fondness of spending time with her siblings and cousins when they lived in New Hamburg, with long summer nights playing baseball, ice cream churning parties on the weekends, and skating along the Nith River in winter. Her formal education ended after Grade 11 when she started working to help support her family. Seemingly on a whim, or perhaps a divine nudge, she went to Canadian Mennonite Bible College in Winnipeg in 1954. It was there that she met her life partner, Albert Wiens, a farmer from Herschel, Saskatchewan, and just over a year later she uprooted all that was familiar and dear to her, married, and moved west.
Adjusting to farming life was not always easy and there were many lean years, but with a determined spirit she learned the ways of a farm wife, baking, gardening, canning, driving truck during harvest, and raising a family. Mom and Dad were actively involved in the Herschel Ebenfeld Mennonite Church and this community became an anchor in her new home. Mom had an eye for beauty and dabbled in painting, was an avid quilter, and liked cut flowers from the garden on her table. Mom and Dad spent many a winter off the farm volunteering with Mennonite Voluntary Service venturing as far as South Africa to be of service. Mom also spent regular hours at the Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Store creating quilts from leftover materials.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Albert Wiens in 2002. She is survived by her son Tim (LaVonne) Wiens, daughter, Joanne Wiens, grandsons Nick (Ahmi) Wiens, Curtis (Jill) Wiens, and Jordan (Valeria) Wiens, and her great-grandchildren Robin, Max and Kiann.
We are grateful for the tender care of the nurses in the Palliative Care Unit as we said goodbye this past week and are thankful for the blessing of a faithful mother with whom we shared a rich life for so long.
The interment will take place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery, Herschel, SK. A Memorial Service will be held at First Mennonite Church, 418 Queen Street, Saskatoon, SK, on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
