Please accept my sincere condolences on learning of Vern’s passing. The memory of our days of riding horseback to Blackstrap School, the 4H Beef club, playing baseball at Dundurn and later visiting together at Phoenix Arizona are all so vivid and cherished in my mind. Dear Irene and Families,
My sincere condolences on Vern’s passing. I know he had a long fight with his health. There were three boys that Ed went to school with; Vern, Henry Block and Henry Schroeder. He used to tell me stories of riding to school with them. After we moved back to our family farm, we knew that if we needed help with anything, Vern would come if he was needed. That was much appreciated. I’m sure Vern will be missed by all who knew him. May you now rest in peace Vern.
I’m one of Vernon’s cousins (on his mother’s side). Here’s some history. Before Blackstrap Lake, the valley bottom was an alkali flat, often with a shallow cover of water, but sometimes dry. One summer in a dry year, My brother Allan and I were at the farm. Vernon showed us his car, and mid-1950s Studebaker Champion. Vernon drove us about for awhile and we then decided that taking a spin on the Blackstrap flats would be a good idea. Vernon let me drive the care. Though Studebakers were not known for power and speed, I urged it forward as fast as it would go. A great white cloud stirred up behind us. Satisfying and dramatic enough, so we called it a day. Black strap flats before the lake and driving a Studebaker fast on it. What more could we want? Vernon showing his sharing self.
