Maurice Arabski

March 18, 1935 – July 7, 2023

Arabski, Maurice passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2023.  He is lovingly remembered by his wife Dianne (Whittle); children, Lynette & Marvin (Fege), Mark & Nancy (Thompson); grandchildren, Eliina Friesen (Scott), Jason (Lisa Taylor), Danée Klassen (Grant), Jordan, Kelsey (Liam Bundschuh); and great-grandchildren Amelii, Solomon, Thabiso, Violet.  Maurice was born in a log home on December 7, 1934 to Stephan & Parania (Gulka) who farmed near Ituna, SK.   As the youngest of eleven children, Myroslaw or little Slowko, loved the outdoors, a love which continued into adulthood – hunting, fishing, berry-picking, golfing, working, and building.  He was predeceased by his parents, Nickolas, Mary Karmarznuk (Steve), John (Martha Pihowich), Olga Hnidy (William), Alex, Bill, Matt (Carolyn Bradkowsky), and Mike.  He is survived by brothers Peter (Tillie Lewko), Nick (Marie Larsen), sister-in-law Nancy (Musyj) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Maurice’s employment experience was diverse beginning in Prince Albert with Canada Post, Coppermine River, NWT as a seismic survey tech for Canadian Nickel Co., then Raymore for the Department of Highways.  In 1959, he met his future wife Dianne in the Raymore Café.  They were married in 1963.  Maurice was hired by Crippen Wright Engineers for Squaw Rapids Dam, began work for PFRA at the South Saskatchewan River Dam, then Shellmouth Dam, Russell, MB.  Maurice and a partner opened Independent Soils Testing, which became Yellowhead Consulting Engineers and Marvey Properties.  He worked for MICC completing home inspections, built homes, duplexes and commercial properties. In the 1980’s, Maurice began Independent Enterprises Ltd, a construction management company, which provided services to Cameco at Rabbit Lake and McCarther River then to Cogema at McLean and Cigar Lakes.   I.E.L. continued commercial construction management projects in Saskatchewan, now with Maurice, Mark and Lynette.

The family enjoyed tenting, camping, traveling and cabins at Weyakwin and Emma Lake.  Trips were always an adventure!  For many years, Maurice was an avid golfer and hunter, owned motorbikes, snowmobiles and various recreational vehicles.  He learned to water, cross-country and downhill ski in his mid 40’s.  Maurice was a man of quiet faith always willing to share his building expertise with his home churches – Lakeview Free Methodist and Emmanuel Baptist.  Maurice was generous, hospitable and always willing to help.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ShareWord (Gideons), 15:5 Church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice.

A private Memorial Service is planned for a later date.

Our condolences on the passing of Maurice. It was an honour to know him during our time together designing and building the Saskatoon Christian School. He was a gifted and talented man. He had a heart of gold and was dedicated in making sure the school was well constructed on our budget at the time. Our paths have crossed a few times over the years and we often reminisced on that time. Sorry for your loss. Henry

I have many fond memories of Uncle Maurice growing up and visiting him and his family in Saskatoon and very much enjoyed special times at their lake cabins. He was a wonderful person who will be missed by all. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.
