Theodoor “Theo” Maatman

Theodoor “Theo” Maatman

October 13, 1946 – December 23, 2022

Theodoor Maatman (Theo) of Saskatoon, SK sadly passed away on December 23, 2022 following complications after he had underwent a routine surgery at St. Pauls Hospital

He was born on October 13, 1946, the oldest of 6 boys, to Bernadus and Aleida Maatman in Gendringen, GLD Netherlands

Theo was the father of 2 children. He was so proud of Dustin and that he had become such an experienced operator of Big Rigs, they spent hours keeping in touch over the phone. Most of all he loved being Opa to his darling granddaughters Lillian, Elizabeth and Abigail. They were the light of his life while they were in his life. Theo was a kind and gentle man who always put his family first. He taught us the importance of carrying the family name with great responsibility, be proud of who we are, and to stay true within our core values. He supported many of those who he cherished including family, friends and colleagues.

Theo first came to Canada on a practicum from college and after graduating with a bachelor degree in agricultural sciences he immigrated back to pursue new opportunities. Following seven years in Ontario he would eventually find himself a new home on the Maatman family farm just outside Aberdeen, SK.

It was at this time that he met the love of his life Henny! and after 10 days he knew she would be the woman he would marry. They were married in 1978 and have been together in faith through many of life’s ups and downs.

When Theo wasn’t working at Agriculture Canada or NRC, he would be found fulfilling his lifelong passion at home in his greenhouse. An avid Greenthumb, he dedicated much of his time tending to his flowers along with supporting his wife with their at home daycare. Theo held himself to a high standard and worked tirelessly in order to provide for those he loved.

Theo Will be sorely missed by his loving wife and best friend Henny and their children, his surviving brothers Rene (Mieke) Maatman, Fred (Tina) Maatman and Sisters in law Adrie, Maria and Mieke along with their extended family and as well Johanna Maatman, Wilma (John) Marissen, Doreen (Peter) Mosterd, John, Paul (Glenda) Maatman, Art (Ineke) Rekman and all their extended families.

    Henny & Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Theo’s passing. I had the great fortunate of meet Theo during my work at the NRC greenhouse. Deb and I would join Theo for morning coffee at the Atrium or at Boffin’s pond. Theo loved all living things, plants, animals and humans. He was forever feeding the birds, the fish and other little creatures. But Theo’s greatest joy was by far his family. He simply glowed when he talked to us about Henny, his kids or his precious grandkids. He was so proud of them all. My sincere condolences… I know Theo will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

While living in Ontario, a long way from Saskatoon, I really appreciated the ability to be present during the celebration of Theo’s life.
