Katharina Robinson
April 22, 1928 – February 17, 2021
Katharina Robinson (Unrau) was born April 22, 1928 in the RM of Rhineland in Manitoba by the US border. She was the youngest child born to her parents Cornelius and Helena. Shortly after Katharina was born the family moved to Rhinefeldt and her mom got sick with TB and died shortly after. The neighbours were very good, a Mennonite village was a very strong group of people who helped look after each other.
In school Katharina would speak mostly low German but for 30 minutes they learned High German because the church services were all in High German.
When they sold the house we lived in, we built a one room building behind where we lived and stayed there till we moved to B.C.
Katharina’s dad gave her a lot of freedom. She had lots of friend and her house was where they all like to come. One of her favorite games was hide and go seek.
Some of Katharina’s chores included hoeing gardens for money as well as lots of babysitting. As well she would milk the neighbour’s cows and she thought that they hadn’t been milked for a couple days at a time so she would just sit and milk and milk some more.
Lots of the landowners lived in the village and hired men to help them and her dad was a hired man and worked for a few different farmers. One of her best times was sitting and listening for the farm wagons to come home after threshing all day. They would come home at dusk. You could tell who was coming by the sound they made.
In 1953 Katharina went to Toronto to take a one-year nurses course that was a missionary medical course. We took a little bit of everything. Her roommate, Claudine, married Harley Robinson after graduation and Katharina would marry his brother, Dalton, about 6 months later.
The married life of Katharina and Dalton carried with it many days of traveling with the children and by themselves once we were gone from home. Katharina was great at entertaining friends at their home for coffee and snacks. She also enjoyed quilting and giving them to her kids and grand kids. She babysat for many years. Then many years of housekeeping at the Senator Hotel and later Parkridge Care Home. When Katharina and Dalton moved to Elim lodge they were involved in many activities both there and at the church.
Katharina had a close relationship with the Lord and shared it with us children growing up. Her faith in Her lord truly sustained her following the death of our dad. Her children have all felt so blessed from time spent with her and especially this last year. Even discovering her crazy sense of humor, great love of food, and how much she enjoyed puzzling.
Katharina was predeceased by her husband Dalton and survived by their three children Saralie, Leonard, and James, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren with many nieces and nephews.
