Family Owned, Family Focused

Eldin Dirks

May 13, 1933 – July 10, 2019

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Eldin Dirks, after a courageous battle with cancer.  Eldin was born to Henry and Bertha Dirks in Waldheim, Saskatchewan and grew up on the farm, attending Springfield School.  When his mother passed away in 1949, he became the family cook.  After a period of farming, he moved to Saskatoon where he worked at Intercontinental Packers and later Surge Dairy Farm Equipment.  His greatest work satisfaction came at Safeway, where he was a produce manager, the plant buyer and then quality control.  In 1962, he graduated from Briercrest Bible Institute.  It was there he met the love of his life, Olive Penner.  They were married August 23, 1963 and had two children, Calvin and Barbara.  The family spent many happy summers trailering to B.C. and skiing in the winter.  Eldin had a strong faith and was always involved in church activities, choirs and quartets.  A highlight came when he and Olive volunteered for four months at the Haggai Institute in Maui.  Here he met many international students, which led to his involvement with the ESL program.  Through this association he has made many dear friends.  Although he experienced several health issues over the years, he lived at home until two months ago.  He was proud of his green lawn and anxious to mow the grass this spring, but instead was admitted to St. Paul’s Hospital.  He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 with Olive at his side.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Olive, son Calvin (Chenoa) Dirks, daughter Barbara (Ronald) Fink, grandchildren Cameron Dirks, Carson, Dirks, Colton Dirks, Carter Dirks, Charlie Fink, Ainsley Fink, brother Irvin (Neoma) Dirks, sister Ann Luhr, sister-in-law Meta Wiebe, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.  He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Bertha (nee Lutke) Dirks, step-mother Emma (nee Gliege) Dirks, brother Alfred Dirks, sister Ruby Epp, brothers-in-law Melvin Epp, Melvin Wiebe and Ray Luhr.  We would like to thank all the medical staff who have supported us through the years, especially the Cancer Clinic, the Palliative Care Unit with their exceptional loving care, along with Dr. Larson, Dr. Laura and Dr. Walker.  In lieu of flowers, donation may be made, in Eldin’s name, to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation/Close to Home Campaign (for the new Hospice).  Viewing at Regier Chapel, Erindale Alliance Church, 310 Perehudoff Crescent, Saskatoon, SK, on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.  Burial to be held at Salem Cemetery on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.  A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Erindale Alliance Church, 310 Perehudoff Crescent, Saskatoon, SK, at 2:00 pm followed by a reception. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

Many fond memories of singing with Eldin at North Park and University Drive Churches back in the 60’s and 70’s. We know your strong faith will carry you through the days of adjustment. Praying that you will rest in God’s abiding care and love.
