Ethel F. Quiring

February 27, 1932 – August 21, 2021

Ethel Frances Quiring left this world to begin her eternal life with Jesus on August 21, 2021.

She was born on February 27, 1932 south of Dalmeny, SK.  After attending elementary school in the Dalmeny and Hepburn areas of the province, she attended Bethany Bible School.  She graduated from Saskatoon Teachers College and taught in Saskatoon Elementary Schools for eleven years.

She went to Eugene, Oregon where she received her Master of Arts degree in counselling, having developed an abiding commitment to Adlerian Psychology.  She returned to Saskatoon and took a counselling position at Walter Murray Collegiate.  When counselling was introduced to the elementary schools, Ethel became an itinerant counsellor in that system.  When she retired from the school system, she established Quiring Counselling Services.  While she worked in schools she spent many of her evenings conducting parenting classes with an Adlerian focus for parents who chose to come.

Ethel was a committed Christian and that interest became evident in many of her encounters but it was always gracious and encouraging. In 1996, she married Hugh Savage with whom she shared many common interest and with whom she partnered in the counselling service.  Those were wonderful years in which a mutual enjoyment of life was shared.

Family was always very important to Ethel.  She had brother and sisters and nieces and nephews, every one of whom was immeasurably important to her and who loved her in return.

Ethel is survived by her husband Hugh Savage; sister Caroline Braun; sister-in-law Ruth Quiring; brother Marvin (Valerie) Quiring; sister Marilyn (Don) Riekman; along with many nieces and nephews, every one of whom were important to her.  She is predeceased by her parents Henry & Mary Quiring, brother Arthur Quiring, and brother-in-law George Braun, and nephew Gerald Braun.

A public viewing will take place on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at Dalmeny Funeral Home, 139 3rd Street. The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, August 30, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Dalmeny Funeral Home, 139 3rd Street, Dalmeny SK. The family invites the use of masks to attend the service.

Memorial donations can be made to MCC, 600 45th Street West, Saskatoon, SK  S7L 5W9 or to the Canadian Bible Society, 952 St. Mary’s Road, Winnipeg, MB, R2M 3R8. Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

I took Adlerian classes from Ethel and Hugh. It was so good to see and visit with them both at Riverside Terrace in January of 2020.

I wish to add my condolences to those of others. I admired the genuineness of Ethel. She possessed great compassion and interest in others. I first knew her when at Teachers College in 1953 and then much later when we were both graduate students at the University of Oregon, 1966-67. We were with the Saskatoon Public Schools for most of our careers. Ethel invested in all she met. Her contribution to others was considerable.

Ethel was a wonderful cousin! She often phoned me on my birthday and shared memories of family visits and details of my childhood. Her commitment to family traditions and our shared history was an inspiration. We remember her fondly. She will be missed! Our thoughts, prayers and condolences to Hugh, Carol, Marvin, and Marilyn.

Condolences to Hugh and the rest of the family. Ethel was instrumental in promoting and teaching the positive and loving democratic parenting approaches of Adler and Dreikurs. So many parent educators as well as parents and their families benefited from her work. She will be missed.

Ethel taught me at Sutherland in Grade 5. It was her first year of teaching. Also my mother’s first year at Sutherland and they became friends, and a friend of our family. I have many fond memories of Ethel over the years. She will be greatly missed.

I first met Ethel early in my teaching career with Saskatoon Public. She became a mentor and friend as my wife, Kathrine, and I attempted to adopt and apply Adlerian principles and practises within our classroom and home. Her caring, passion and intellect were inspirational. Undoubtedly she helped many of us grow and touched many lives. Condolences to Hugh and her family.. Ours and the community will really miss her..

Our condolence to Hugh and family. It is sad to see that Ethel has passed but we are heartened by the wonderful memories we have of her and Hugh on their “estate”. We so enjoyed the extended coffee breaks, listening to her rich life experiences , sharing ideas and important values. It always made my work seem so worth while and appreciated. Rest in peace.

Miss Quiring helped me from grade 3 to grade 9. If it wasnt for her, i probably wouldnt be here today.
I turned my life around, and she believed in me.
I look after people with learning disabilities today. I use alot of her tools she gave me.
She was a wonderful woman. Now she is an angel.

    Rest (by Ethelwyn Wetherald 1895)

From the depths of dreams I am drawn
To the inner depth of a pine,
That near my window keeps the dawn—
A dawn that is wholly mine.
    Dream-rest and pine-rest,
And a cool, gray path between—
A cool, gray path from the night’s breast
To the heart of the living green.

To the depths of dreams I go
On the sounds of falling rain,
That in the night-time gently flow
In a stream on my window-pane.
    Stream-rest and dream-rest,
And a cool, dark path between—
A cool, dark path from the rain’s breast
To the heart of the soft unseen.
