Marlene Nickel

October 29, 1935 – March 29, 2021

On March 29th 2021, Marlene Nickel, wife, mother, daughter, and sister passed away in her sleep at the age of 85 years old. She was born on the 29th of October, 1935 in Carman Manitoba to parents Harold and Gladys McGill. In 1940 her father enlisted to fight in WWII. He died in action in July 1944, and is buried in France. Marlene graduated with a degree in nursing from Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. In 1960 she married William Nickel, a farmer from Borden Saskatchewan.  Along came 4 children, and then in 1977 Willie died suddenly right in the middle of harvest. With the help of family and friends she continued to raise her kids, and in 1979 she married Hans Nickel. After years on the farm Marlene realized she was more of a city girl, and once her kids were grown she retired with Hans to Saskatoon where she started volunteering with many organizations.

Over the years Marlene travelled a lot, although her favorite destination was Clearwater Beach in Florida. In 2017 she moved into Bethany Manor, where she spent her last years surrounded by family and many friends.

Marlene was predeceased by her two husbands, Willie in 1977 and Hans Nickel in 2009. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons and daughters; Gary & Renee Nickel, Howard & Nancy Nickel, Judy & Garth Thompson, and Lisa Nickel; her grandchildren Logan (Julia) and Raquel Nickel, Liane Nickel and Andrea (Ian) Karwandy, Tyrel, Carlene and Zachary Thompson, Liam, Emma and Ashley Bassiere; 3 great-grandchildren Dallas, Connor and Hailey Nickel; and her sister Eileen (Don) Kroeker.

Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but ever near.

Condolences to the family. As a kid, Marlene occasionally babysat me and I always enjoyed my time at their place on the farm. She was always kind and made my stays fun. The food was always good too!!! She will be missed by many.

We are very sorry for your loss of a special lady. My (Diane) memories are mostly from our years of going to church. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Lee and Diane

My sincere sympathy to you all. I have many, many good memories of my friendship of over 30 years with Marlene . The three trips we took together are high on the list. Now we all can be thankful that her days of suffering are over.

My condolences to the whole family. Marlene had such incredible energy with a keen interest in others and a love for travel; her adventure to the interior of Brazil for a visit! Fond childhood memories of our family visits to the Nickel farm-always warm and welcoming.
