Janet Gilmour
June 28, 1937 – May 24, 2020
The family of Janet Gilmour is saddened to announce her passing on May 24, 2020. Janet was predeceased by her parents Gus & Mabel Simard, and her sister Genevieve Friesen. She is survived by her sister, Marsene Sokalofsky; and her children Mary (Doran) Adrian, Alex (Steve) Vieira, Rob (Yvonne) Gilmour and grandchildren Paige, Steven, Everett, Alison (Carter), Simon, Alexandra, Madison, Ryan and Sara.
Our mom lived a wonderful life. She was born in Cabri on the family farm in 1937. Her mom was part of the Mickelson Family Orchestra that played many dances in the area. Mom grew up loving music! Later the family moved to Swift Current and then to Rosetown. Mom and her sisters Genevieve and Marsene attended St. Joseph’s Convent. After high school Mom worked at Medical Services in Saskatoon as an assessor.
Mom was married in 1958 to Richard Gilmour. Together they had three children: Mary Gaye, Alex, and Robert.
After her divorce in 1980, Mom took a library technician course at SIAST and then worked at Holy Cross High School for 22 years. She loved working with the staff and students there.
Mom grew up as a Girl Guider and continued in Guiding as a leader and commissioner. She especially enjoyed serving as Camp Director at various Girl Guide camps.
Mom was thrilled to join Sweet Adelines in 1970. She absolutely loved being part of a group of women who loved to sing. Going to Regional competitions every year was a highlight where many friendships were developed.
After she retired, Mom joined the Caring Clowns at Royal University Hospital. Her clown name was Gazoo and she loved the chance to be silly and bring a smile to someone’s face. Later she joined the Meri Misfits, who entertain at various facilities with their fall prevention program. This group brought her a lot of joy as they combined the love of singing with humorous skits.
In her later years, when Mom was unable to live on her own, she lived with her son Rob and daughter-in-law, Yvonne. Their family welcomed Mom into their home and Yvonne provided Mom with outstanding love and care during her last years. Mom was a faithful parishioner at Holy Spirit Parish where the weekly church service was very important to her.
Thank you to the Day Program staff at Sherbrooke Community Center and to Saskatoon Palliative Care Services.
Mom’s family will celebrate her life at a later date in a private service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Foundation for the “Close to Home” hospice. Arrangements entrusted to DALMENY FUNERAL HOME 306-254-2022.
