Margaret Ewert

December 12, 1927 – June 1, 2026

Our dear mother, Margaret (Sawatzky) Ewert was born on December 12, 1927, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Margaretha (Klassen) Sawatzky and John W. Sawatzky. When she was still quite young her family moved to Vancouver where she grew up exploring the city together with her younger siblings Katharina, Marie, and John. Here she developed a deep Christian faith and a love for words and adventure. These provided the foundation for a very long and vital life.

As a student of the written word, Margaret was able to return to Manitoba to earn her high school diploma at Mennonite Collegiate Institute at Gretna before she went on to earn a BA degree at the University of British Columbia, and later a Master of Library Science at the University of Seattle. In these early years she also attended Vancouver Bible Institute and Canadian Mennonite Bible College (CMBC).  She taught elementary school for eight years in BC and worked as a librarian and English instructor at CMBC. A trailblazer in her chosen profession, Margaret was the second female staff member to teach at CMBC. It was there that she was visited by a widower with four children who proposed marriage and a move to rural Saskatchewan. Her acceptance enabled her to continue pursuing her life’s calling and greatest passions – reading, church work and family – now somewhat reordered.

Margaret’s gifts for leadership and desire for sharing God’s love stretched across many borders. She taught Sunday school in three different provinces, served as a member of Women in Mission both in Saskatchewan and then as president of Canadian Women in Mission, served internationally on the Commission of Overseas Mission of the General Conference Mennonite Church and on its Congregational Resource Board, various local assignments at Drake North Star Church including deacon and congregational chair.

Margaret married Milton Ewert in First Mennonite Church, Vancouver, BC on November 14, 1964. That day her hopes for a husband and family were realized as she also became a parent to two stepsons, Ted and Wallace, and two stepdaughters Rachel and Christine Jill. Through 33 years of marriage, adventure and companionship, Margaret and Milton were united in their commitment to making the world a better place. They guided their children through to young adulthood and careers and families of their own. Margaret immersed herself in local community life, travelling with Milton to visit family, and caring for her precious family.

After Milton’s death in 1997, Margaret continued to live in their Drake condo until it became apparent that her health was declining. She moved into senior residences in Saskatoon. In the last year of her life, Margaret moved frequently as her changing health dictated. In November 2025 she became a resident at Diamond House, Warman where she lived until her passing on June 1, 2026.

Margaret will be remembered for her deep faith in God, dedication to Christian service, loving commitment to family, and a non-anxious presence in times of trouble. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched as international missions’ worker, committee member, librarian and educator, church leader, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, husband Milton, sister Kathy, stepson Wallace, stepdaughter Christine Jill, son-in-law Mark Christie and others in her large extended families. Left to mourn her passing are her stepson Ted (Joanne), grandchildren Wade, Elan (Aidan Morgan), and Jay (Cheryl), great grandchildren Jackson and Liam; daughter-in-law Claire (Wallace) (Garth Ewert Fisher), grandson Matt, great grandchildren Matthew and Atheena, and granddaughter Lara (Byron) Ewert Molesky, great grandchildren Gwyneth and Nicholas; stepdaughter Rachel (Mark Christie), grandchildren Andrea and Russel; son-in-law Jim Henderson (Chris Jill), grandchild Wyatt, great grandchildren Lukas, Benjamin and Joel.
