Elizabeth “Betty” Friesen
July 16, 1924 – April 12, 2026
Betty was born (1924) to Peter and Maria (Unger) Wiebe of Blumenort, MB. She attended local public school plus three years at Steinbach Bible School. Third oldest of 11 children, she enjoyed her youth on the family farm in Blumenort, and her early adulthood on the farm to which their family moved near Castle Point (Carberry, MB). From there she pursued nurses training (LPN) in Winnipeg. After a year of work at Portage hospital she took high school courses at Caronport, SK to fulfill her requirements for mission work. She then followed her call to missions in Mali, W. Africa with Gospel Missionary Union (now Avant Ministries), serving for over 36 years. In 1964 she married a widower and fellow missionary, Rueben Friesen, becoming an instant mother to his three young children, Dorothy, Karon and Paul. Dwight was born a couple of years later.
Betty is predeceased by her husband Rueben, brothers John, Bill, Ed, Fred, and Peter, sisters Margaret, Lydia, and Kathy, brothers-in-law Louie, Jacques, Denis, John and Raymond, and sisters-in-law Anne and Helen. She is survived by her brother Abe and sister Mary, sisters-in-law Adeline and Rosemarie, their children and spouses, 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff at Bethany Manor and Sherbrooke Community Centre for their compassionate care for Betty.
