Samantha Bouphaphanh
May 31, 2002 – October 2, 2025
On the evening of Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, our beloved Samantha passed away in our arms after a brave and fearless battle against colon cancer. She was diagnosed only 16 short months ago and had just celebrated her 23rd birthday on May 31st.
Samantha was a smart, sensitive, loving, and caring daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend. She had a wonderful sense of humour and a love for all things cute and cuddly (particularly her bunny Snowball). Her biggest passion in life was reading, and she was never more than an arm’s reach away from a pile of books. Her bedroom was full of stacks of books, and her favourite outings involved a trip to the bookstore or the library. She also had a passion for all things chocolate and loved baking lots of delicious treats with her mom. She was well known for her famous carrot cake. She loved watching a good musical, anime, or documentary with her dad, searching for new recipes and cooking with her mom, spending time with friends and family, and playing the piano.
Samantha’s young life was filled with challenges that she faced with strength and courage, having been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12, and ulcerative colitis less than a year later. She never let those challenges prevent her from doing anything and she finished high school with great grades and went on to study at the University of Saskatchewan. She was in her third year of studies for an English degree when she received her devastating cancer diagnosis.
Samantha’s favourite place in the world was Waskesiu Lake, and she spent two weeks there every summer with her family making memories. She had recently caught the travel bug after her history class in high school went to Europe and most recently, she went to Vancouver and Nanaimo, BC as one of the recipients of the Cameco Roughriders Field of Dreams program. There were so many places in the world on her bucket list that she wanted to visit and explore.
Samantha was predeceased by her grandfathers, Sam Bouphaphanh and Henry Funk. She is survived by her parents Melanie and Phonesak (Pony), brother Adam, sister Nika, grandmothers Ella and Khem, Uncle Sheldon (Lisa), Auntie Carrie, Uncle Chai (Nini), Uncle Bouny (Oudalay), Auntie Gateen, and cousins Christabella, Galex, Leo, and Dino, along with numerous extended family and loved ones. She will be deeply missed by everyone, and family get-togethers will never be the same without her. She was always quietly observing everything and everyone and was known for remembering all the little details of every major life event. A life cut short on the cusp of flight that will be loved and remembered eternally.
We would like to extend our gratitude to all of the wonderful doctors and nurses on the palliative care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital that took such wonderful care of Samantha in her final days. Your care and compassion meant so much to all of us.
Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

We are heartbroken for the loss of our dear friend Samantha. We will forever remember her sweetness, smarts and silliness. Our family “Bouphatag” get togethers will never be the same but we are grateful for the time we had together and Samantha’s lasting gift of bringing us together.
We are heartbroken for you all. I have been looking at photos since we met 23 years ago and raised kids together. You have captured Samantha so perfectly in the words you have shared here. She was an amazing, kind, gentle soul who faced so much heath hardship, which she faced with courage and resiliency. I’m thankful for the amazing times together like Kindermusik, dim sum parties, birthday parties and Waskesui fun. We love you so much – please know you aren’t alone as you grieve and continue on.
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of dear sweet Samantha. She was such a kind and gentle soul. I loved having her in my Grade One class many years ago. My heart goes out to you, as you grieve your beautiful daughter and sister. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
It seems so unfair that the world has lost such a kind and shining light. May time ease your pain and all of your wonderful memories with Samantha be ever-present as I am sure she is somewhere close by, wanting you to smile when you think of her. Love and gentle hugs to you, Melanie, Pony and Adam.
I am so sorry to hear of your heartbreak. I remember teaching Samantha and Daniel and Fiona, the 3 musketeers. They kept me in my toes and are some of my fondest memories. May your memories bring peace and laughter and, of course, tears as you remember the light that she was.
