Elsie Siemens
April 5, 1940 – April 23, 2025
Elsie passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at her home in Bethany Manor at the age of 85 years young. She will forever be remembered by her family, son Tony (Asunta), Joshua and Sebastian, son Jason (AnDrea), and Emerson.
Mom, Elsie Siemens was born on April 5th 1940 on the family farm near Hague, Saskatchewan, to Jacob and Katharina (Guenther) Hiebert. She was the 8th child of 11. Mom attended elementary school at Pembroke in the Village of Neuanlage. Her high school years were spent at R.J. Davidson in Osler Saskatchewan. After high school Mom attended Swift Current Bible School, where she would meet her husband to be, William (Bill) Siemens.
When Dad left to do missionary service work in Taiwan, Mom went to Grace Hospital in Winnipeg for three years where she earned her Registered Nurse Diploma. After Dad returned from service in Taiwan they were married on July 8, 1967. Mom worked as a nurse in hospitals in Saskatoon, Rosthern, Lampman, and Biggar Saskatchewan. Anthony (Tony) James, their first son was born on December 13, 1969 during their time in Biggar. In 1970 Mom and Dad were invited back to Taiwan to manage a Community Development project. In 1973, Jason Pierre, their second son, the pilot, was born while they were in Taiwan. After returning to Canada in late 1973 Mom and Dad settled in Saskatoon. Mom continued to work as a Nurse, mainly at St. Paul’s hospital until her retirement in 2000.
After retirement from nursing Mom and Dad continued their service in Alymer Ontario. Mom and Dad spent four years in Alymer supporting the low German speaking Mennonites who were moving to Ontario from Mexico.
After moving back to Saskatoon Mom and Dad continued to travel for service and enjoyment. They spent time hosting at the guest house in Shipshewana Indiana, house sitting a bed and breakfast on Galiano Island in BC, traveling to Alaska and Belize. Of course there were many trips to Altona, Winkler, Calgary and Victoria to visit their grandchildren.
In 2019 Mom and Dad moved into Bethany Manor. After Dads death in September of 2019 Mom initially struggled to find purpose alone at Bethany. With the support of her Mount Royal church and Bethany community she began to get involved. Mom was a regular in the quilting room, enjoyed the debates of the philosopher corner, expanded her horizons with the book club, played a mean game of crokinole, and of course sang in the Bethany choir. After a 17 year battle with cancer Mom died peacefully in her home at Bethany Manor with her children by her side. Mom will forever be remembered for her caring unselfish service to others, her bright smile and warm hugs.
