Elizabeth “Betty” Martens
February 12, 1932 – February 3, 2025
Elizabeth “Betty” Martens was born in the Pembina Hills near Morden, Manitoba on February 12, 1932 to John and Lena Enns. Here she enjoyed growing up with 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Life wasn’t always easy but her parents worked hard to provide for the family.
Mom was a pioneer of her generation and was determined to put herself through nursing school. She honed her natural skills in cooking and was hired at the local hospital. This helped finance her education. She eventually graduated and worked at the Carmen Hospital. During this time she met the love of her life, Henry Martens.
Henry and Betty were married at the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church on September 9th, 1956. This began a love affair that would last 66 years. Mom loved Dad and served him her whole life. She seemed to never tire of doing whatever it took to make her beloved “honey” happy.
Mom made a commitment to Christ early in life and after they were married both her and dad made a commitment together, to make Christ the center of their home. They served the local church in both Winnipeg and Saskatoon and enjoyed the fellowship and friendship that church life brings.
Mom’s joy in life was dad first and her boys a close second. She loved being a mom to her “boys” and would do and sacrifice just about anything to bring them love and joy whenever she could. Her grandchildren; Andrew, Christopher, and Avianna brought a renewed sense of purpose, meaning and joy upon their arrival.
Mom’s Christian faith was evident until the very end. We often heard her repeat time and time again, “God has been so good” and “He always gives us what we need to get through the day”. The simple gospel story which had influenced and changed her life was her passion and gave her the strength to carry on when life became difficult.
Mom has joined her savior Jesus, her beloved Henry, parents John and Lena Enns, sister Helen, brothers Jake and John and other beloved family members in Heaven. We, her family are thankful for a Mom who was a prayer warrior and loved Jesus deeply and lived out her faith well.
She leaves to grieve but not without hope, her son Murray and his wife Val and their children Andrew and Christopher. Her son Mitchell and his wife Diane and Mitchell’s daughter Avianna.
We want to give thanks for Mom and Dad’s special friends Kevin and Alice Miller and for their love and care and concern for them both especially the last years. To the Staff at Bethany, your care, love, and friendship to them has given us great comfort and joy over the 7 plus years they have made Bethany Place their home.
2 Corinthians 2: 6-8 That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us dropping our heads or dragging our feet! They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. Its what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. (The message translation).
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Manor Fellowship Centre, 110 La Ronge Road, Saskatoon, SK.

Our condolences to you Murray & Val! We have pleasant memories of your Mom. Our prayers are with your family.
Love and prayers and condolences to Murray, Val, Mitch and families. My memories of your Mom go back to my youth group days at Central Mennonite and the many times Murray’s folks welcomed us into their home. I especially loved the nights of snowmobiling and coming back inside to Mrs. Martens’ hot cocoa and pizza buns and delicious baking.. She was generous with her time and cooking talents and desire for young people to come to know and serve the Lord.
