Viola Neufeld

October 14, 1931 – September 27, 2024

Viola Neufeld (nee Quiring) went to be with her Lord and Saviour on September 27, 2024 at Central Haven Special Care Home. Viola was born October 14, 1931 in Hepburn to John E. and Helena Quiring. She was one of seven children and had many happy memories of growing up together on the farm.

In the winter of 1949, while skating on a pond with some other young people, Viola met Harold Neufeld. The romance blossomed and they married the next year. Together they embarked on business ventures and raised a family of five children. They were married for 61 years when Dad passed in 2012.

Mom’s skills shone in the kitchen. She made sure that none of her family, or boarders or guests would ever leave her home hungry. When Dad or some of the boys arrived home late for supper (“a customer came in at five minutes to closing”), it never seemed to be a big deal. The family blissfully recalls all manner of delectable memories such as her Swiss Steak (always in two batches – one in brown gravy, the other in tomato sauce) and her huge Sunday dinners after which they’d choose from three freshly baked pies. Sigh.

Mom loved to give. “Help yourself!” or “Just take it”, the grandchildren fondly recall. Hospitality was a way of life for her. She found joy in hosting family and friends (or kids’ friends) for meals or overnight in their home or the cottage at Anglin Lake or the condo in Rancho Mirage.

Acts of service was her “love language”. She didn’t care for recognition but she served others and the church in the background in ways like driving neighbourhood kids to Pioneer Girls or Brigade Boys or teaching Sunday School for little ones.

Mom and Dad visited many parts of the world but especially enjoyed winter months in “the desert” near Palm Springs. It became a favourite stop for many friends in their travels.

In her latter years, Mom experienced numerous health challenges but endured them with grace and contentment. She took her losses in stride. Her faith in her eternal future with Christ held secure.

Viola was predeceased by Harold, her parents, sisters Ruby and Louise, brothers Wilmer, Walter, Art, two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter. She leaves behind children Murray (Audrey), Don (Janet), Rob (Mardell), Karen (Jim) Boldt, Lorrie (Lloyd) Postnikoff, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and her sister Sophie.

The family is grateful for the compassionate loving care that Mom received at Central Haven. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Central Haven (via the Sherbrooke Foundation) or to ShareWord Global (formerly The Gideons).

The Memorial will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Grove Community Church, 502 Webster St., Saskatoon. To watch the live stream please click on the link below.

I’m so glad Vi went Home to be with Jesus and all her loved ones. I wonder how many pies she’s already made in her amazing kitchen in her mansion that Jesus built for her – people are lining up!
