Jacob J. Wiebe

November 3, 1927 – August 4, 2024

Jacob Jake Wiebe, born on November 3, 1927, in Alexandrowka, South Russia, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2024 at the age of 96. He was the son of Maria (Sawatzky) and Jacob G. Wiebe. Jacob and his parents emigrated from Russia in 1928.  They arrived in Quebec on November 10, after a voyage on the “T.S.S. Baltara” and the “Duchess of Athol.”

In his early years, Jacob lived with his family in Herbert, Saskatchewan, before moving to a farm near Manitou Lake near Watrous, Saskatchewan. He attended Plymouth School, and his thirst for knowledge led him to Rosthern Bible School and correspondence courses in diesel mechanics and electronics.  He was baptized on confession of faith on May 26, 1947 at Bethania Mennonite Church in Watrous.

Jacob’s work took him from carpentry in Watrous to an electronics shop in Saskatoon. In 1961, he established his own electronics business, “Spectromatic TV,” which he ran until his retirement in 1988.

On August 18, 1954, Jacob married Irene Beatrice Ewert at North Star Mennonite Church in Drake, Saskatchewan. Their first home was at the pumping station at the east end of Manitou Lake. In Saskatoon, they rented a small house on Avenue G while they built a new house on Avenue U. They were blessed with four children:
Daniel (Lois Friesen) with Graham (fiancée: Karen Jackson);
Betty (Emmin Hosein) with Vincent, Nicholas, DeAnna;
Bernard (Colleen Fehr) with Anthony (Lisa Ginther), Carmen (Hugo Valle); and
David (Carol Reddekopp) with Dustin, Ashley (Daniel Mcallister);
and ten great-grandchildren.  In 2000 Jacob and Irene sold their house and moved into Bethany Manor.

Jacob had a wide range of hobbies including astronomy, mechanics, woodworking, gardening, solving puzzles, playing chess, reading, playing ukelele, collecting coins, computer programming and painting. Jacob won pool tournaments for several years at Bethany Manor.

Active in his church, Jacob served as a Sunday school teacher, church chairman, treasurer, and deacon.

He was predeceased by his wife, father, mother, brothers: Rudy, Peter, George and John. He was survived by four sisters: Marie, Tina, Lee (Helen), and Anne.

Jacob J. Wiebe leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of faith, family, and community.  He has made a significant and lasting impact.
