Gerald Douglas “Doug” Richards

Gerald Douglas “Doug” Richards

November 16, 1946 – July 4, 2023

Doug Richards passed away on July 4, 2023.  He was born to Clint and Norma Richards in Vanguard on Nov 16, 1946, the youngest of eight.  Pursuing the livelihood that comes naturally to so many, he made a long and successful career as a farmer.  Of the many hats that come with that role, he was respected for his skill and innovation in fabrication and repair, always working to ensure that his equipment did the best job possible.  And if the repair took a little time but no money to complete, that was all the better.

All who know Doug will be aware of his life-long challenges with the vision issues caused by his affliction with Retinitis Pigmentosa.  He accepted that with tremendous grace, and never failed to surprise with his independence.  In 2006, a successful surgery addressed colorectal cancer, and we were granted more time for all of us, and for him to see his grandchildren grow.  In 2020, cancer reoccurred, and despite surgery and chemotherapy, that cancer became a battle that he could not win.

Doug is survived by his wife Darlene; sons Daniel and Michael; and grandchildren Denin (Jene) Nienaber and their daughter Xia, and Emerson and Lincoln Richards.  We will always remember his love of his Basset Hounds, his eagerness to help others with a challenge, and how he loved a good story and a good laugh.

In his memory, please consider donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and specify that you wish to support their technology programs.

As Doug wished, no service will be held.  Please take a moment to remember him with loved ones.

Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

If Dan is anything to go by, he also had a good sense of humor. I only met Doug a few months ago, but I enjoyed my meal and visit; he seemed like a really genuine person, and his family and friends were lucky to have him. Take care Dan and family, I look forward to hearing more stories the next time we meet.

I enjoyed getting calls from Uncle Doug. He always had funny stories to tell of comments he made to the nurses and doctors.
He always spoke highly of both Daniel and Michael and was very proud of his grandchildren. He spoke of them often telling me of their achievements. Rest in peace Uncle Doug and don’t get into too much trouble up there.😘

Darlene, Dan and family and Mike I am sorry for your loss, Having spent many days with all of you at your house while growing up, cooking in your kitchen and sewing at your table or just visiting, I will never forget Doug’s laugh and his teasing and his love for his spoiled pups. Please know we are thinking of you and sending our love.
