Elsie Warkentin
August 22, 1926 – January 5, 2023
Our mother, Elsie Warkentin, died peacefully on Jan. 5, 2023, surrounded by her children. She was predeceased by her husband Abe Warkentin, and her son-in-law Bill Sobkow. She is survived by her children, Erna Sobkow, Ruth Warkentin (Jim Hawrishok), Vern Warkentin (Chris), Charlotte Warkentin and Peter Warkentin (Nancy Stevens), as well as 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Elsie was born in 1926. She was one of 10 children born to Peter and Liese (Loewen) Klassen. She grew up on a farm near Superb, SK. where she continued to reside after her marriage to Abe Warkentin in 1948. Abe and Elsie moved to Saskatoon after retiring from the farm. Elsie enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and various kinds of hand work. She had a passion for reading throughout her life. Although she only had a grade 9 education, after her move to Saskatoon, Elsie audited some classes at the U of S. She took swimming lessons and swam regularly, started jogging daily, was active in her church and volunteered at the Mennonite Clothes Closet for many years. Elsie’s children and family were the central focus of her life and she was always very supportive of them. She resided at Bethany Manor for 24 years until her recent move to a personal care home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Elsie’s memory can be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 600 45th Street West Saskatoon, SK, S7L 5W9. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Bethany Fellowship Centre, 110 La Ronge Rd, Saskatoon. The family requests that masks be worn.
