Sarah Buhler

March 3, 1926 – May 6, 2022

Sarah Buhler passed away peacefully in the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home on May 6, 2022 at the age of 96 years. Mom was born March 3, 1926 at Rosenbach, SK to Isaak G. and Maria Janzen, the fifth of thirteen children.

She grew up on a farm near Osler, SK. When she was old enough, she moved to Warman and worked in the Hospital there until July 1948, when she married John Buhler. They began married life on the farm north of Aberdeen, and moved several times before settling in Hague, SK in 1956 to raise their boys.

Mom loved to cook large Mennonite meals for her growing family. It used to make the local newspaper how many `vareniki’ her family and guests had consumed on the weekend. She also baked for the Hague community once a year! People still talk about her `portzelky’ (new year’s cookies) that she made and sold every New Year’s Eve.

Mom enjoyed nothing more than her weekly shopping trips to ‘the mall’ in Saskatoon. Along with some of her Hague friends, they affectionately became known as ‘the three musketeers, they would take turns driving to Lawson Heights Mall to shop, eat at Zeller’s, and visit with friends and acquaintances from Saskatoon.

Mom had a true pioneer spirit. Her family was poor when she grew up and everyone was to work hard. She always had a huge garden with lots of potatoes; lots of potatoes meant that you would never go hungry! She carried this spirit (and a little stubbornness) with her as she aged. Even though it was very painful at times, Mom walked with only the aid of a walker until a stroke on April 27th of this year took that away from her.

Sarah was predeceased by her parents, Isaak and Maria; her husband, John in 1985, sisters; Maria, Elisabeth, Aganetha, Susana, and Eva, brothers; Isaak, Peter, Gerhard, and Jacob.

She is survived by her sons: Ed (Ida), Cornie (Mary), Norman (Luann); grandchildren: Shauna (Darryl) Klassen, Sheldon (Janet), Juanita (Henry) Reimer, Ivan (Ruth), Sharmen (Joe) Martin, Nikita, Levi, Beau, and Harley (Lyndsey); 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother Henry, sisters Tina Unrah and Helen (Abe) Wiebe and many other relatives and friends.

Heartfelt appreciation is expressed by the family for the staff at Warman Mennonite Special Care Home for their compassion and care of Mom through her final weeks.

Public visitation will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at Dalmeny Funeral Home, 139 3rd Street, Dalmeny, SK and Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 11:00 am at the chapel of North View Mennonite Haven, 201 Centennial Blvd, Warman, SK.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Reinfeld Bergthaler Mennonite Church, East of Hague, SK with Rev. Henry Janzen officiating with interment to follow. Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.
