George (Gerhard) Unger

December 21, 1938 – April 3, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Unger — beloved husband to Susan, father to Edward (deceased), AnneMarie (deceased), Gordon (Connie), Dave, and Linda (Mario), and grandfather and great-grandfather to many.

George had long awaited the completion of his journey into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. He passed away on April 3, 2025, at the age of 86 in RUH, after enduring multiple bouts of illness throughout the year. George was a devoted husband and father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He lived a full life marked by love for his family, his faith in the Lord, an ever-present sense of humour, and a strong belief that the only thing worth drinking was Coke.

George was born to Cornelius and Anna on December 7, 1938, in Durango, Mexico. One of nine siblings, he lived there until the age of 17, when the family made the long train ride to Hague, Saskatchewan, to begin a new life in Canada. In the spring of 1960, George was baptized and committed himself to a lifelong journey of faith and service to the church.

He began working in construction in Saskatoon and later at a car wash, where fate intervened — he saw Susan picking cucumbers in Blumenthal and declared, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry.” They wed on July 17, 1960, in Carrot River and began their life together in Saskatoon, welcoming their first two children, Edward and AnneMarie.

The family later moved to Fisk, then to Asquith to farm. A subsequent move to Allan brought more blessings, with the births of Gordon and Dave. Finally, in Aberdeen, their family was completed with the arrival of Linda.

In 1971, the family made the big move to Thompson, where George worked in the mine until his retirement in 1995. During those years, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, bowling, and even took up flying. He helped build the Thompson Bible Chapel, which became the family’s church home for many years.

After retiring, George and Susan returned to Saskatchewan, settling in Rosthern. There, George could often be found on the golf course, either playing or helping as a marshal. He loved giving tractor rides to his grandkids up and down the back alley and playing Manitoba Rummy. He has a passion for woodworking and crafted many beautiful clocks that still chime today.

In 2007, the couple moved to Warman. George worked at Janzen Steel for 10 more years, finally retiring at the age of 80. He spent many mornings golfing and was often seen driving his scooter to McDonald’s for coffee with the guys in the afternoons. In 2008, he traveled to Bolivia to help launch a new Christian school — a dream he helped bring to life through years of work with the church.

In 2023, George and Susan made their final move to South Haven, where they spent two additional wonderful years together enjoying puzzles, card games, and treasured time with family and friends.

George is predeceased by his parents, Cornelius and Anna; four brothers; one sister; and his children Edward and AnneMarie.

He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 64 years, Susan; his children and their families — Gordon and Connie – Aaron, Brant, Courtney and Brandon (Maverick); Dave – Dion and Larissa; Linda and Mario – Tyler and Sherrie (Tayliea, Ophelia), Brayden and Kalissa (Avia, Carter), Matthew and Shea (Maeve, Halle); and by many beloved siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Rest in God’s loving hands, George — until we meet again.

Corny & I send our condolences to you and your family Susan. We have so many memories of time spent together with you and George. At church and getting together playing games. Every time I see an order of onions rings at Chicken Chef, I always think of George. May God be with you and comfort you as you learn to live life without George.
