Louise Evelyn Fischer
April 9, 1933 – August 27, 2024
Louise Evelyn Fischer (nee Epp) was born April 9, 1933, and went to her Savior, August 27, 2024. Mom was born on the farm near Laird, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Peter and Tena Epp. She had an older brother Harold, and a younger sister Marj.
Louise started her education in a small country school near Laird and when she was 9, the family moved into town, where she finished her schooling.
Her teen years were spent with friends, and the MB church youth group. It was during these years that mom gave her heart to Jesus, and a year later she was baptized in the Laird Conference Church.
In her late teens, Louise met a dashing young man. Reuben was living alone on the farm, close to Laird. This fact alone, was enough for rumors to be told about him. But… they were madly in love and could not be kept apart. In time mom’s parents learned to love him as well. They were engaged in February, and married June 1st, 1951.
Five years on the farm were full of adventures, lots of fun together and with friends. Some favorite stories include:
– Due to a spring snowstorm, keeping 500 chicks on the 2nd floor of the house, for one month!!
– Driving to Waldhiem on the train tracks (many times)
– Rolling the truck over in the field, and not telling anyone for years
This is also where mom and dad started renovating homes (painting a room at midnight or turning the summer kitchen into a granary). As they were farming, in season, there was lots of time with friends, and family. The children came during these years as well. Audrey Marie, born in 1954; Donna Dianne, born in 1957; and Robert Allan, born in 1961.
In 1957, the decision to move off the farm and into Saskatoon was made. Dad started in construction (temporarily) but as he enjoyed the work, it became his career of choice. Eventually he started teaching carpentry at Kelsey and stayed there until his retirement after 25 years.
Mom and dad worked hard at whatever they did. Dad’s teaching career, and mom having a house full of boarders. For $60 per month, this work included full meals and laundry (everything ironed and folded) for 6 men, plus our family. Some of the boarders became great friends, and those relationships have continued till mom’s passing. In 1967, mom started working at Sears and stayed until her retirement.
The years passed with all the ups and downs that every family has. Three house renovations, two new house builds, and many holidays together. Hawaii was a favorite as were the golf trips to BC, and the road trips through many of the US States. The children were married and grandchildren came.
In 1987 Dad’s health changed, and another era started for mom. Thirteen years of caring for dad ended when he passed away in 2000. These were difficult years for mom, but she started to find strength in the Lord. This continued and grew through the rest of her life.
After dad’s passing Mom started travelling and she really enjoyed taking bus tours, 13 in all, around North America. The eastern states and Branson Missouri were favorites, the fall color tours were special, as well as the trip to New York city, and at least one trip through eastern Canada. There were many beautiful sights seen, gospel concerts heard, and very good friendships made. Some of these have lasted till recent as well. Mom and Donna also looked forward to the annual trip to Palm Springs to help shorten the winters.
In 2013, mom moved into Preston Park, and she stayed in this home until 4 days before her passing. These were good years for mom. She had support when she needed it and accepted it. More great friendships were made during the years at Preston Park.
Mom was not a flamboyant, outgoing person. She preferred to be in the background, quiet but actively supporting those who liked the front. This was very evident at the church where she made a point of going out for lunch, and getting to know each of the pastors, including the most recent. Mom found meeting new people difficult, but once a friendship was formed, it lasted. She will be dearly missed by many.
On behalf of Louise, we would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Preston Park for their kind care and friendship during her stay there.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Audrey (Murray) Neufeld; Adam and Krista Neufeld, Anicka; Jon and Becky Neufeld, Finn, Liesl, Rosy, Jonny, Nico. Mark and Shayla Neufeld. Tim and Bekah Neufeld, Jasmine. Her daughter Donna McCullum. Her son Robert (Fern) Fischer, Jason Fischer. Graham and Emily Fischer. Candace Bighead, Dakota Giesbrecht, Theodora Bighead.
She was predeceased by her husband Reuben, her parents Peter and Tena Epp, and brother Harold and sister Marj.

I will dearly miss Louise. Her daily visits were comforting and encouraging. I loved her stories while styling her hair during Covid restrictions and her continued supportive kindness. My hugs to her family and grand children.
I have so many fond memories of Aunt Louise, especially the times we spent at their house while I was growing up. Aunt Louise was always so pleasant to be around. She genuinely showed interest in everything I was doing, even well into adulthood. I’m so glad we were able to watch the memorial online. She is rejoicing in heaven! Our thoughts are with all the family members at this time.
Our condolences to you Audrey,Murray and family.
