George Buhler

George Buhler

April 24, 1949 – August 8, 2024

George Buhler was born April 24, 1949 to Abram J and Aganetha Buhler.  He spent his growing up years on the family farm in the Aberdeen area.  George was baptized on confession of his faith on May 26, 1969 at the Schoenwiese Church.  On November 27, 1971 George married Anne Peters.  Together they raised four children on the family farm just outside of Gruenfeld.

On June 23, 1985 George was ordained as a pastor of the Bergthaler Mennonite Church.  With fear and trembling he stepped into the role of pastor with his wife by his side.  Together they served in this role in the church for several years then on December 3, 1989 George was ordained as the bishop of the church.  Once again, he stepped into this role and served the church for 26 years.  In 2011 he retired from ministry.  February 2013 his beloved wife Anne passed away.  May 31, 2014 George married Anna Wiebe.  Together they built a home in Osler where they welcomed many friends and family.

In December of 2023 George was diagnosed with colon cancer.  He underwent surgery to remove the cancerous growth.  Chemo treatments did not go well for him, and he and Anna decided to stop the treatments and enjoy what time they had left together.  On July 20, 2024 George was taken by ambulance to RUH.  There it was determined that the cancer had spread.  George faithfully lived out his last weeks in the hospital, reminding those who visited him that his hope was in Jesus and his eternity secure.  On August 8, 2024 the Lord called His faithful servant home.  “I have fought the fight; I have finished the race . . .” II Timothy 4:7.

George is lovingly remembered by his wife Anna; children Melanie (Travis), Laurena (Charles), Lyndon (Kathy), David (Christina); grandchildren Leo, Kenlee, Chance, Adam (Ashley), Caitlin, Amy, Emily, Samara, Layla and Dahlia; great grandchild Elaya.
