Betty Schierling
August 25, 1935 – November 29, 2023
Betty was born in Hepburn on August 25, 1935 to Peter & Helen Peters. She attended Neuhoffnung School, southeast of Langham. She accepted Christ at a young age at a revival meeting and was baptized at age 13. She grew up on the family farm at Langham and married her sweetheart, Pete Schierling on August 5, 1954.
Mom worked hard on the mixed farm helping Dad, as well as all domestic duties including quilting, sewing clothes and wedding attire for family and friends.
They were blessed with five children, Diane, Jeannette, Brad and to their surprise the twins, Laurel and Lyle.
In March of 1974, they were dealt a devastating blow, when their son Lyle passed away suddenly at the age of 8. Dad broke the news to Mom while she was in the hospital with pneumonia, and she was released just in time to follow the snowplow to the funeral. Through this difficult time, their faith in God and the prayers of many friends and family is what sustained them.
Over the years, Mom & Dad took many trips together. Highlights being the “Thank You Canada” bus tour across the US, and 2 family trips to California and Hawaii. After Dad passed in 2007, Mom took 4 trips to Yuma and went on several bus trips.
She taught Sunday School; worked with Awana for more than 25 years. She was part of Ladies Willing Hands and Timeless Music. She led Bible studies in her home. She also hosted Ladies Teas, which helped her with loneliness after Dad’s passing. Mom played piano and sang in trios & choirs. All this culminated in her being given the Anna Rieger 2012 Christian Education Worker of the Year Award for faithfully and effectively teaching and modeling the Word of God at Langham Evangelical Bible Church.
Mom loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was so thrilled that they are actively following the Lord.
Mom had the gift of hospitality, entertaining many friends and loved to play games. She enjoyed word search, jigsaw puzzles, reading, especially her Bible, and was a constant prayer warrior. Mom had a great sense of humor and a laugh that was infectious. Her phone was her lifeline and how she connected with people; this included her annual Christmas calls.
In October 2016, Mom moved into Spruce Villa Assisted Living, and in 2021, due to declining health, moved next door into Spruce Manor Special Care Home. She truly felt at home while living there. We thank the staff so much for their love and care for Mom. She loved them dearly. She passed away there peacefully early Wednesday morning, Nov 29, 2023 at the age of 88.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Pete, son Lyle, brother-in-law Pete Thiessen and Dad’s siblings and spouses: Jake (Rubina), John (Viola), Henry (Helen), Esther (Herman) Boldt, Bertha (Ivan) Danbrook. She leaves behind her children Diane (Tim) Vellacott; Jeannette (Don) Block; Brad (Karen) Schierling; Laurel (Howard) Waldner; her 3 grandsons Justin (Rachel) Block and their children Kemper, Rowyn & Kadence; Lyndon (Kayla) Block and their children Ava & Madden; Tarrell (Mandy-Rae) Block; and one sister Luella Thiessen.

our thoughts and prayers to Brad and Karen and all the family
To all Betty’s family, our sincere condolences and prayers 🙏 are with you, we will truly miss this lovely lady and the prayer warrior she was.
I will miss Betty profoundly. She was pretty much one of my first friends when I moved to Langham and was my Avon lady for many years. After I moved back to B.C. in 2016, we had our annual Christmas chats on the phone, which I always looked forward to. She was a beautiful soul who gave of herself constantly. She was loved by everyone. I will miss my Christmas call this year.
To the whole Schierling family! I am so sorry that your mom passed away. Remember her so well as she was such good friends with my siblings. Your mom was always so vibrant and so full of laughter! Praying for you at this difficult time!
Our sincere condolences to all of Betty’s family on her passing. We will remember Betty for her love and her prayers for our whole family. She would always put a smile on our faces even through a phone call. This world is worse off without her but God’s promises for Betty have now come to light! We will miss you Betty!!
To Laurel and Howard & the Schierling family!!….Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you say goodbye to your mother!!
Our sincere sympathies to all of our Aunt Betty’s family. She was a blessing to us as we would enjoy the annual Christmas phone calls to hear of all the family news and periodical visits. We will miss her but we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We watched the memorial service online and enjoyed the tributes paid to her for a life well lived.
We pray for God’s comfort for each family member.
With our love Garry &N Emma, Plano, Texas
I am so sorry to have learned about Betty’s passing, She had the most beautiful smile and infectious laugh – it was always a joy to visit, even just for a few moments during daily life as our parents were not just family but also next-door neighbours, I know they treasured that connection. Losing your Mom is a profound loss, praying for your family’s peace and comfort.
I was so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. She was a good friend of my mom’s when they lived beside each other
