Ruby Anne Schultz

June 2, 1937 – June 8, 2023

Ruby Anne Schultz went to be with her Lord and Saviour, in the early hours of June 8, 2023, after a battle with progressive Alzheimer’s. Ruby was born at the Rosthern Hospital to Isaac and Annie Elias on June 2, 1937. Her early years were spent with her parents and her brother Clarence in teacherages in the Rosthern valley, and then 8 years in Hepburn while Ike managed the Co-op store. She left high school early to work in the bank in Hepburn and later was transferred to Saskatoon. She was a bright student and played basketball as one of her many activities. She was strong in her faith and her relationship with Jesus was evident throughout her life. She always showed a keen sense of wit and humor.

Ruby met and then married Loyal Schultz in August, 1958. After the first years in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, they moved to Saskatoon. Faith, family and music were the foundations of the joy in her life. Our home was always filled with music, and she loved to entertain and be with the many friends from the community and church. Together with some of her closest friends, she developed the Yamaha music program in Saskatoon and taught through Yamaha, at home and at the Osler school. She paid attention to detail, and her students not only excelled, but learned to appreciate music and so much more in the relationships that were developed with her. Through these children and adult students, thousands have been blessed and influenced by her dedication to teaching music.

Ruby also loved to travel. Together our parents made many trips abroad, to almost every continent. She was diligent in documenting each trip with pictures and narratives, carefully placed in albums for all to enjoy. Her thrifty nature was matched with work ethic, and as children, we benefited from that with musical instruments and lessons, sports, travel and investment in our family cabin.

The lake was mom’s happy place. Entertaining friends and family, time spent with her kids and grandkids, water sports, golfing and walking were just some of the activities she enjoyed the most. Ruby was truly an amazing example of service to everyone and most certainly a joy unto the Lord. Those of us who knew her and Loyal, were witness to her dedication to Dad and our family. She has left a legacy for all of us to remember and be thankful for.

She leaves behind her husband, Loyal, son Russ (Nicole) Schultz, son Rod (Wendy) Schultz, daughter Colleen (Barry) Friesen; brother Clarence (Darlene) Elias, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.

The family wants to thank Hyde Park Personal Care Home and Sunnyside Adventist Care Home and their staff for the care and love they gave to Ruby in the last year. In Lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee Canada (MCC).

A Memorial Service in her honor will take place in Saskatoon, at Forest Grove Community Church, 502 Webster Street, Saskatoon, SK on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.

Loyal – I know how you feel. I’ve been left 2 and a half; years ago and it seems to never change. We grew up together after being babies together! We both went into education with you as a principal and me as a music supervisor. When you started teaching (with Ruby), Ardon Schmidt and I came out to visit you somewhere in the country? For now, I say STAY STRONG! Will call you when it settles – if it ever does. Your mom was my wonderful S>S> teacher for year. So grateful you and Ruby had a successful life and God loves you!!! Your old friend, Helga Lutke Medd.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Shultz and family. Mr. Schultz was my 9th grade teacher in Birch Hills. He taught me how to study—I ended up getting my doctorate because of him. His wife attended a musical performance J played in. In the middle of the piece I forgot the notes so I just made up the rest. Afterwards she came up to me and smiled. She said , “That was a must interesting version of Greensleeves.” She never let on that she knew I had made it up. Grand lady!!

Mrs. Schultz was my piano teacher from age 6 until 14. She was such an integral part of my childhood and the development of my love of music which extended to my own years as a music teacher. Her impact moved past me as a student to hundreds of my own and while she will be missed, she will not be forgotten.
