David Klassen
November 29, 1930 – June 8, 2023
David Klassen of Warman, SK passed away peacefully June 8, 2023.
David Klassen married Katherina (Tena) Friesen on October 21, 1956, enjoying 57 blessed years together. Through sickness and health, their lives were a living testimony of real devotion to one another. Prior to her passing, Dad spent so many days at our Mom’s side at the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home, compassionately tending to her needs. We take comfort knowing that they are reunited once again.
Dad was a farmer through and through. He loved planting and watching seeds germinate and grow, and the days that we received a wonderful rainfall were the happiest. Throughout his life, Dad had a dairy farm, raised beautiful herds of Charolais cattle, and enjoyed grain farming. After a full day in the fields, nothing filled his heart more than saying “let’s go for a car ride”, and off we would go, stopping at the corner store for a chocolate bar for everyone before heading out to check on all the crops in the area. It was the “simple” things he enjoyed, and that was wonderful family time now that we look back. And family was very important to Dad. He loved each one of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. When we would visit him later in life, if one family member was missing, he would often ask, where is your sister or brother, and would encourage that they come soon to tell him all about their travels and what was happening in their life. Dad didn’t ask for much, a triple-triple coffee, evening walks with Mom and us kids, a good game of crokinole, or a bowl of ice cream would bring a big smile to his face, especially when enjoyed with his grandchildren. He also loved watching nature and would bring hay bales to the yard to feed the deer for Mom and him to enjoy through their picture window. Dad maintained his sense of humour, and his positivity, even when times were hard; a true inspiration to us all.
He could read 3 languages: Low German, High German, and English, and he was proud of this too, boasting about this to his grandkids, followed by “not too bad for someone who only had grade 6 education!” He also enjoyed reading the “Die Mennonitische Post”, a German newspaper sharing stories from North and South America.
Dad volunteered for many years on the board of the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home. Little did we know at the time that this place would become his and Mom’s home, and we appreciate the care they have given to them both.
Dad’s faith in God was strong. Often on a rainy day or winter evening we would find him reading the Bible. More recently, he would like to take our hands after each visit and strongly recite the Lord’s Prayer with us. We will miss you and our visits, until we meet again “Papa.”
Dad leaves to mourn his children: Ken (Ann) Klassen, Dale (Lou-ann) Klassen, Ed (Crystal) Klassen, Wendy (Richard) Weber, Frieda (Don) Gesiorowski. “Grandpa David” will be greatly missed by: Chrissy (Terry) Fehr, Alexa & Sienna; Jamie (Katlyn) Klassen, Noah & Piper; Dylan (Bethany) Adrian, Holden & Kendall; Jesse (Sami) Adrian; Mitchell (Brittany) Weber; Lyndon (Erika) Weber; Kendra (Darwin) Penner, Brynnley; Mikaela (Anthony) Gesiorowski; Erin (Maxime) Gesiorowski. David is survived by his sister Helen (Ted) Robertson, brother Isaac (Louise) Klassen & sister Margaret (Bill) Janzen. David was predeceased by his parents John & Gertrude Klassen, step mother Elizabeth Janzen, brother John Klassen & sister-in-law Anne Klassen, brother Jacob “Jake” Klassen & sister-in-law Helen Hiebert, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Milford.
