Betty Schmidt
July 24, 1927 – May 12, 2023
Betty Schmidt (nee Fast) was born near Dalmeny, Saskatchewan, on July 24th, 1927 to parents, Peter and Nettie Fast. She was the second youngest of ten siblings and led a full life on the family farm. Her spiritual heritage was rich and she committed her life as a young child to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Her faith was steadfast throughout her life.
Betty set her sights on a nursing career and graduated from nurses training at City Hospital in 1950. She enjoyed a career as a Registered Nurse, and excelled in the operating room, where she worked with precision and great interest. She married Ed in 1951 and they pursued their careers, family and church life in Saskatoon. As much as nursing was a highlight for her life, she valued her role as mother to their four children. She encouraged their love of nature and activities, such as camping, horseback riding and outdoor activities. Her attention to noticing details was always apparent, whether in nature or her career. Highlights for her were being involved in Nursing Alumni, camp nurse “Cotton” at Oshkidee, winning marathon cross country skiing loppets to guiding visually impaired cross country skiers in award winning national competitions. Later in life she transitioned from looking after sick people to the wellness industry, where she excelled in making connections with people. Whether with family or strangers, she was known for her kindness, outgoing and warm personality. These traits were apparent throughout her life right through to her final days. She always thought of others and their needs. She often expressed gratefulness to Ed for the care he provided in the last few years. Betty passed away peacefully on May 12th with Ed by her side.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ed, her four children, Marilyn (Keith) Bunn, Rick (Dawn) Schmidt, Cathy (Neal) den Hollander, Bruce (Carolynn) Schmidt and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She had a profound impact on all as she lived a life of love, acceptance and graciousness. She will be greatly missed, but she looked forward to being reunited with us in her eternal home. She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings, along with several extended family, with whom she is now in joyous celebration. Betty loved life, her family and adventure. She had a lifelong steadfast faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour, who joyfully welcomed her into her eternal home. Her adventures continue.
A Celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., at Forest Grove Community Church, 502 Webster Street, Saskatoon, SK .

When someone has completed their race and is received in our heavenly Father’s arms, a gap remains that time can not be bridged. They have moved on to a glorious place where holy peace abounds. My sincere condolences to everyone in your family while you grieve the loss of your loved one. Treasure her memory as you share this time together.

We are so saddened by the loss of Marilyn’s mom. In the snippets of time we spent with her, she shone with life and joy. I ( Janet) remembered sitting with a group of friends while Betty enlightened us on the benefits of estrogen cream 🙂 She always had a smile and asked how we were. I expect she did that with everyone, but she had a way of making you feel special and that it was all about you at that time. She was a proud Grandma and a wonderful role-model for woman of all ages. Our hearts are with you as you transition to life without her as well as our prayers. I (Janet) had the opportunity to watch Betty’s celebration of life. Thank you to each one of you for sharing your stories about Betty and inviting us here in Thunder Bay to be part of her service. A beautiful tribute to a beautiful Lady.
So sorry I was not able to attend the service today. Auntie Betty was an aunt I adored, looked up to. I was blessed to be her niece. She was always so lovely, so engaging,, so full of life. My Mom always told me when she had talked to “Betty” – those conversations were so important to her. I remember her staying very current and very much a people person, with a vibrant faith in her Savior. I will miss my Auntie Betty.
Rick, Marilyn, Bruce and Kathy. We are thinking of you all. You have been there for your parents over the last few years and it is sad to say goodbye to your Mom, Aunt Betty. Give your Dad a hug from us.
