Doris Vera Anne Epp

Doris Verna Anne Epp

Doris Vera Anne Epp

March 29, 1930 – May 5, 2023

Mom was born on the farm near Mennon, SK to John J. and Anna Thiessen.  She attended Edenberg one-room school house till Grade 8, and then took correspondence for parts of Grade 9 and 10.  After that she stayed home to help and was especially close to her father who had Parkinson’s Disease, whom she helped to feed and shave. It was the Dirty 30’s and life on the farm wasn’t always easy.

Upon confession of her faith, Mom was baptized in June, 1949.  Faith was an integral part of Mom’s life and even the day before she passed when it was very difficult to get words out, with the help of a niece who was there at the time, she prayed for each and every one of her children.

Mom was active in the church and attended Zoar Mennonite Church in Langham for many years.  This is where she happened to spot a handsome fellow named Elmer Epp whom she married on June 25, 1952.  Five children came of this union:  Douglas, Judy, David, Mark & Janice.  She worked hard on the farm west of Langham and was always busy baking and making meals.  She was a great hostess and wanted to make sure everyone’s needs were taken care of.

Mom showed us her quiet strength and reliance on her faith, when the husband she loved so much  passed away suddenly in 1995.  Then in 2004 she mourned the sudden passing of her eldest son, Douglas.  A few years after Dad’s passing she moved into a duplex in the Town of Langham, followed a few years later by a move to a senior’s residence in Saskatoon.  The time came when her health didn’t allow her to stay there anymore and she moved back to Langham into the Langham Care Home.   In 2019 she relocated to Warman Mennonite Special Care Home.  Some adjustments over the years weren’t always easy for her, but she was very stoic and found joy in making new relationships wherever she went.

Mom took great joy in watching her grandchildren and great grand-children grow and thrive.  She had many pictures in her room of her loved ones and these pictures were very important to her.  Over the years Mom affectionately became known by family and others as “The Queen” and she wore this title well right till the end.

These last few weeks were so difficult for Mom as her body just couldn’t recover from the various ailments.  She was ready to be welcomed into Jesus’ arms and be reunited with Elmer.  Hers was a peaceful passing, and although we mourn her loss we rejoice that she is finally at peace.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, John J. and Anna Thiessen, her husband Elmer, son Douglas, and brothers Claus, Clarence, Johnny and Peter Thiessen.  Left to mourn her loss are sons David (Therese), Mark (Gloria), daughters Judy (Jack), Janice (Daryl), daughter-in-law  Carrol; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn her loss are sister-in-law Helen Epp, many nieces and nephews and all whose lives she touched.

Special thanks go to the wonderful staff at Warman Mennonite Special Care Home who took such good care of Mom.  Mom spoke of her care aids so often (sometimes changing the names to what suited her!), but she loved and appreciated you all so much.  We will never forget the loving way you cared for our Mom.

Mrs. Epp as the Matriarch of the Elmer Epp Family you reigned as a Queen through your unconditional love of each & every member of your clan of five children, their partners & spouses, your grandchildren, nieces & nephews, cousins, & their friends & relatives. You made everyone feel special during their visits with you & afterward I had a feeling of serenity having witnessed your care & compassion for others. I can only imagine the warmest reunification for you with Elmer & Doug & in the presence of your Savior Jesus Christ.
