Henry Martens
June 3, 1934 – March 17, 2023
It is with heavy hearts, and much hope for a reunion some day, that we, the family of Henry Martens, announce his passing into glory on Friday, March 17, 2023.
Henry was born into a loving family on the family farm near Winkler, Manitoba on June 3, 1934 to Peter C. and Tina Martens. Here he grew up the youngest of 5 on the farm enjoying all that farm life had to offer.
Henry met the love of his life and courted this lovely young nurse, Elizabeth (Betty) Enns, while she worked at the Carmen Hospital. They married September 9th, 1956 and thus began a love story that lasted almost 67 years. Their boys and spouses and grandchildren can attest to the example they both were of true love that was shown by a gentle spirit and a servant heart in both of them.
Henry made the best decision of his life shortly after he was married, and after the death of his father, by committing his life to Jesus and making him the centre of his life. Betty also recommitted her life and came back into a relationship with Jesus at the same time. This was followed by water baptism at the Furby Alliance church in Winnipeg in 1957, for both of them, which declared their faith publicly .
Shortly after, Henry and Betty made the move to Winnipeg to start a new life together as newlyweds. Henry went to school and worked at Federated Coop and Betty continued on with her nursing career. After the loss of 3 babies early in pregnancy, and much grief, they were very excited to welcome Murray and then Mitchell into their growing family.
In 1965 they moved to Saskatoon anticipating they would eventually move back to Winnipeg. Henry was a partner in a new venture and business starting Glenway Windows. This was eventually sold while in Saskatoon. Henry continued in management and in sales for the next years always in the Window and door Industry at Dashwood Windows, Wilmar Windows, Saskatoon Doors and Windows and retiring at Indal Windows in the 1990’s.
Throughout Dad and Mom’s time in Saskatoon, they were actively involved in church life from University Drive Alliance, Nutana M.B., Central M.B., and Forest Grove Community Church. Dad sang in many performances from solos to choirs in church, using his voice to glorify his Savior.
We (sons Murray and Mitch) have excellent memories with special neighbours and friends growing up on Paul Crescent in Saskatoon and then, in 1973, moving out to the family acreage northwest of Saskatoon. It was there we lived a boys dream with snowmobiling parties, dirt bikes, cross country skiing, horses and cattle raising and grain farming. We both learned about hard work by doing many chores.
Dad always was interested and took an active role in his boys activities which included driving us to church events, hockey and football practices, and camp outings and road trips. We will cherish all of these childhood memories.
Dad took an interest in all our lives and activities up to the last weeks of his life, enjoying all the stories and accomplishments, especially of his grandchildren. We will miss his calls and our Tim Horton coffee runs with him in mind. We will also miss his daily prayers for all of us.
Left to cherish his memory with the hope of Heaven are: His beloved wife Betty; sons Murray (Val) of Saskatoon; Mitchell (Diane) of White Rock BC.; Grandsons; Andrew Martens and Christopher Martens of Saskatoon; and Avianna Martens of Tsawwassen, BC.; and numerous in-laws and nephews and nieces.
We would like to thank the Staff at Bethany Place for their outstanding care love and friendship to Dad in the last years. We would also like to thank the Palliative team at St. Paul’s Hospital for making dads transition to heaven so peaceful.

Dear Martens family, we are so very sorry for your loss, our sincerest condolences! You have lost a great husband, father and grandfather. I will always remember him as a very committed and honorable person, a man with a great voice. My memory goes back to 1964 when be both sang in the Sacred Music Society in Winnipeg and then reconnecting here in Saskatoon, having the privilege of singing with Henry as a duet. Henry possessed a deep faith and it is this faith which guided him throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by so many.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss but also rejoice in the fact that Henry is in the arms of Jesus.
I will always remember the wonderful sound of his laugh. It will remain in my memory always.
I so appreciated the times we spent together catching up on each other’s lives.
I pray for God’s peace for all of you.
Heaven is a richer place by his presence.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Henry. He gave me my first job after high school at Glenway Supply. He was a great boss, showing much patience with someone just starting out. I remember the many coffee breaks we had and was always glad when he joined us in the warehouse for coffee; because we knew that when he was there the coffee breaks were always longer. His love for stories and laughter always cheered the workplace environment. Though many years have passed since those days, my memories of them remain so clear.
