Alice Rempel
December 4, 1924 – November 21, 2022
Alice Ruth Rempel was born to Joseph and Alvina Schmidt on December 4, 1924 near Waldheim. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 21, 2022 at age 97 at St. Paul’s Hospital. Alice was the second child of nine children. As a young child she was not well, as she had rickets and was not able to walk til she was four years old. Her school years were spent at Brotherfield school near Waldheim where she completed grade 6. She and her family attended Salem Church. For a while her family moved to a farm north of Dalmeny. During this time, she attended Dalmeny Bible School.
When her family moved to Saskatoon, she worked packaging eggs at Dairy Producers.
The story of Jake and Alice’s first meeting was at the Emmanuel Church young people’s evening has often entertained the family (usually to mom’s embarrassment). As was usual at this type of event the young men were on one side of the room, the ladies on the other side. A young lady had caught the attention of Jake and his friend, at the challenge of Jake’s friend he decided to make a move. So, Jake took it upon himself to be hospitable and took a pot of coffee and went and offered Alice a cup of coffee, but Alice did not have a coffee cup; so she cupped her hands, after this the details get a bit fuzzy, but that how it started.
Jake and Alice were married June 4, 1952 in New Westminster United Church in Saskatoon. If you have a perpetual calendar, you will find it is a Wednesday, this was because it was a day off for Joe Schmidt, Alice’s dad. They lived on the homestead farm until 2004, an interesting point is that the Schmidt home in Saskatoon did not have electricity but the Rempel farm already had electricity in 1952 . They raised five children: Marlene, Betty, Wilmer, Howard and Roger. Her life was devoted to her children and the farm. She raised chickens for her family as well as for an additional source of income. She also enjoyed growing a large garden. High lights during this time were celebrating their 25th anniversary on the farm and then their 50th anniversary. In 2004, Alice and Jake moved into Langham Yellowhead Manor leaving the farm in the hands of their son Wilmer. After 52+ years on the farm, Alice very much enjoyed life in the town of Langham. The two of them lived there until Jake’s passing in 2007.
Alice moved into Bethany Manor in 2008 where she resided until her passing. Her years at Bethany were filled with the social aspect of life there. She made several close friends who were special to her. She enjoyed puzzling, playing games and sharing meals with them.
Alice accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized during her years at Salem. Following their marriage, the family attended Langham Bible Church. Alice loved to listen to the Christian radio programming both in English and low German. Alice was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known to pray for each of them every day.
Alice really enjoyed traveling whenever she had the opportunity, highlighted by trips to Arizona with her sister Mildred; to Ontario to see her brother Marvin and his family, and a couple of bus tours one of which was in Amish country in the USA.
Alice is survived by children Marlene (Abe) Hein, Betty (Doug) Unruh, Wilmer (Sharon), Howard, Roger (Charlie) along with grandchildren Darryl (Michelle) and Nelson Hein; Chelsea (Matt) Dueck and Michael (Jessica) Rempel; Miranda (Caleb) James, Jeffrey (Jesse) Munro and Aimee (Jordan) Knodel and Joshua Rempel.
Though Alice never seemed a robust person she survived over 50 years living the life of a farm wife, survived several health crises including double pneumonia and breast cancer in 1995 and greatly enjoyed 16 years living at Bethany Manor. After she was knocked over at the bus stop and was hurt quite badly, so she was allowed to move to the fourth story of Bethany Place. She loved the extra sunshine in her new suite. When she started to settle in, she said, “I’m just moving up in this world, the next time I move, it will be up to heaven”, which is what she did this week.
She also has five great-grandchildren Theodore and Selah Hein, Ezra and Elijah James, and Hailey Rempel. She is also survived by brothers Marvin (Margaret) and Stan, and sister Mabel and brother-in-law Elmer Goa.
She was predeceased by her husband Jacob, parents Joseph and Alvina along with her brother Wesley and sisters Miriam, Mildred, Selma and Shirley.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul’s hospital 5th floor for their kind care of Mom and kind treatment of our family!
The viewing will take place on Friday, November 25, 2022 at 7:00pm at Bethany Manor, 110 LaRonge Road, Saskatoon, SK.
