Maynard Waldner
May 17, 1934 – November 11, 2022
It is with sadness of heart, but with the joy of knowing Dad is with his Lord and Savior, that we announce his peaceful passing on November 11, 2022, surrounded by his extended family.
Maynard was born on the family farm on May 17, 1934, near Dalmeny. His rural roots grounded him and gave him a strong work ethic. He was the middle son to Joe P. & Kate Waldner. Because Dad was always eager to play ball, and hockey on the Mauser Slough for the infamous Mauser Sloughhawks, he always completed his assigned chores with keen diligence. Being raised on the family farm, he worked with cattle and drove a team of horses at a young age, and so his love of horses began.
As a teenager, Maynard asked Josephine Miller to yugenfrein, a Sunday night youth service, held at Emmanuel Country Church. The courtship continued at Taber Bible School and came to fruition with an engagement. He married Josie on June 24, 1955. As a young married couple, they went to Millar College of the Bible (MMBI), where Dad completed his Bible School training. After a brief ministry in Tisdale, they moved to Saskatoon. Dad worked in management roles for different grocery stores. In 1970, Dad’s dream of taking over the family farm, materialized. With the move to the farm, Dad accepted leadership roles at both the MB church and the local school board. He served in both capacities for many years. Dad loved the dairy farm, but he loved horses even more, so there was always a team and riding horses for his family and their friends to enjoy. As a couple, Mom and Dad showed care and hospitality in a variety of ways. When unexpected company arrived, you would hear Dad joke, “Come on in, we’ll just add a little more water to the soup”. Mom and Dad were married for 42 years, before Mom passed away of cancer in 1997.
Dad married Corinne Brown on October 24, 1998. They both had lost their spouses and understood how hard it was to be alone. They lived in Langham, then moved to Saskatoon within a couple of years. This second chapter was filled with travel and enjoying their combined family.
Since Dad had retired from dairy farming, you might have expected him to fill his days with other interests. But his love for the land, horses and all things farming never waned. It’s true what they say, “You can take the farmer off of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the farmer”. Even in his “retirement” he regularly made trips out to the farm (the ranchette), and his hobby of horses continued until just a few short years ago.
His greatest joy was sharing the message of salvation found in the completed work of Christ on the cross. Dad was a lay pastor for Emmanuel Country Church, and enjoyed bringing encouragement to those in hospital, care homes, and those who were housebound. His friends and family would say, what Dad enjoyed, he wanted to share, so he often bought multiple copies of books, DVD’s, and CD’s to give away. Sometimes, Dad would even offer a monetary reward if you read a theological book of his recommendation. Dad encouraged and prayed faithfully for his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. As a family, we are all thankful for Dad’s godly example.
Mourning his loss are his wife Corinne, his children, Howard (Laurel), David (Lanette), Sheila Propp, Lori (Dan) Budd. His stepchildren, Cameron (Sandra), Caralee (Dave), Charis (Tony), Autumn (Blaine); 20 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Also mourning his passing are his brother Virgil, sister-in-law Nettie Miller, brother-in-law Stan (Marg) Miller.
He was preceded in death by his young son Russell, his first wife Josephine, sister-in-law Tina, brother Don and sister-in-law Donna, and sister Violet, in infancy.
