Karen Baerg

September 13, 1962 – October 15, 2022

Karen Jo-Anne Baerg (Nicholson) of Dalmeny, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully at Spruce Manor on October 15, 2022. After a six-year battle, she lost her fight with cancer. Karen is lovingly remembered by her husband Toby Baerg and her three children: Ashley, Courtney (Riley), and Brandon (Rachel). Her granddaughters Sophie and Macy brought her great joy. She is also survived by her mother Marie Nicholson, her three brothers Ross, Calvin (Marie), and Gordie and her large extended family. She is predeceased by her father John Nicholson, mother and father-in-law Henry and Linda Baerg, brothers-in-law Jim Baerg, Ron Samson, Bill Baerg and Art Lepp and sister-in-law Susan Baerg.

Karen was born on September 13, 1962, in Maidstone, Saskatchewan. She shared many fond memories of growing up on the family farm north of town. After graduating high school, she worked as a care aid at the nursing home in Maidstone for four years before moving to Saskatoon to pursue her nursing degree. She spent the first year of her career in Medicine Hat before moving back to Saskatoon to start her family with Toby. They met in January of 1985, and they were married on July 11, 1987. Together, they moved to Dalmeny in 1990 and have lived there for 32 years. In that time, she transitioned to working in long-term care, raised her three children and became very involved in town.

Although Karen didn’t enjoy being the center of attention, she loved to host. She had an incredible sense of humour and a quick wit. In addition to her thirty-plus years as a nurse, she supported Toby on the farm by driving combine. This lasted one day before she decided her skills were better served back in the kitchen. She was very generous with her time, coaching baseball, serving at the Dalmeny Community Church, and making sure her three kids lived life to the fullest. Karen was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the Toronto Blue Jays. More recently, she loved to volunteer at The Bridge where she cooked and served meals for people living in the core of Saskatoon.

Karen took many family trips throughout the US and to Norway. She also travelled to Australia and Victoria, BC with her girls. She checked off a bucket list item when she travelled to the Maritimes with her parents, brother, and aunt. Karen fell in love with lake life as a child at Loon Lake and continued to go with her family until they bought a cabin at Sturgeon Lake in 2004. It brought her lots of joy to see the family create lasting memories each summer.

Karen’s faith was very important to her. She and Toby were baptized in 2001 at the Dalmeny Community Church. Karen was active in many bible studies and made it a point to teach her children to follow God. She enjoyed her time serving on the kitchen committee with her family. She remained faithful to God until He called her home.

The Baerg and Nicholson family would like to thank all the staff at Spruce Manor for the care and compassion they showed Karen. They would also like to thank all their family and friends for their years of support, countless prayers, and comforting meals.

Interment will take place at the Dalmeny Community Church Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022 with Memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Dalmeny Bible Church. Memorial donations may be made to The Bridge on 20^th Fellowship Centre, 1008 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Y7.
