May 7, 1954 – July 17, 2022

Born May 7, 1954 in Langham, Saskatchewan.

Ginie peacefully passed away July 17, 2022 at Oliver Lodge Saskatoon, Saskatchewan after a two year fight with triple negative metastatic breast cancer which unfortunately moved into her brain.

Ginie’s parents:

George ( July 26, 1917 – April 6, 1996) and Opal Landes (August 22, 1920 – July 22, 2010) lived on George’s family farm where they raised their four children.

Surviving siblings are her sisters:

Carole and (Earl) Opheim

Joan and (Carl) Hackman

Predeceased siblings:

Robert Landes

Donna Landes

Ginie met her husband Bruce Thompson in Calgary, Alberta. They married in Calgary on November 25, 1972.

Left to mourn is her only daughter Cherie, husband Steven Loraas and their daughters. Ginie’s granddaughters Ashley and Brooklyn Thompson.

Ginie grew up on the Landes family farm out in rural Langham, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of her siblings. Later on George purchased a parcel of farm land one mile south from his original homestead in in the 1960’s.

Ginie attended Langham Elementary and Langham High School from grade 1 to grade 12 graduating in 1972.

She also attended church on Sundays with her parents at the First Saskatchewan Lutheran Church which her parents helped build. There Ginie joined the choir and took voice lessons. Ginie’s voice was absolutely amazing.

She also took piano lessons. The family loved to listen to her play piano. Every Christmas the family would gather around in George and Opal’s living room while Ginie played Christmas carols and everyone sang along with her. She played many waltzes with great skill but the family favourite was no question The Robin’s Return.

Ginie also loved to garden. Every summer she would be outside planting, picking, freezing, and canning. She also loved to plant beautiful flowers around her house as well as having several indoor plants. Later when she started caring for Opal in her home she would plant vegetables in pots inside the house and would have them growing all year round.

Genealogy was another passion of Ginie’s. She was always reading and researching. You could ask about anyone’s family in the community and she would would know their entire family history.

Something not everyone may not have known about Ginie was her gift of drawing. She loved to draw cartoon characters of family. From mice to cats to what ever animal she felt suited the person best. She would also spend hours drawing out and creating blue prints of her dream houses. When she and Bruce finally decided to build their house it was Ginie who drew up the blueprints and designed their home to her liking keeping family gatherings in mind. She would map out the space needed. She knew they needed two kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms for guests when the family hosted many of the BBQ’s they had in the summer.

Ginie absolutely loved cats. Living out on the farm there was always a cat or twenty that were spoiled, well fed and loved to cuddle. She had a huge collection of cat trinkets, paintings and photos. If it had a cat on it she owned it. Ginie loved all animals really. She would feed birds, deer and all sorts of other wildlife that came into the yard. Even the porcupine was well fed.

Ginie was also known to be an incredible cook and baker. All vegetables came from the garden. Fresh fruit was always supplied from local orchards if it wasn’t grown in the gardens. She was always cooking making soups, spaghetti sauces, chili, goodies, always lots of delicious baked goods and so much more. Food was rarely purchased at a grocery store. If she could grow it, freeze or can it she did. She was so creative and could design beautiful birthday and anniversary cakes.

But what Ginie loved most was her family. She was a stay at home mom and spent many hours playing games with her daughter Cherie. She even would dress up like an Easter Bunny for her many nieces, nephews, daughter, and then granddaughters throughout the years. She was so patient and loving around children. Her biggest loves of her life were her two granddaughters. Ashley spent most of her time out on the farm while growing up. Bruce and Ginie even took Ashley in as their own so Cherie could finish school. She loved to read children’s books, sing and watch children’s movies and television shows with both her granddaughters. Truth be told Ginie absolutely loved Walt Disney cartoons so would happily make popcorn and sit down with Ashley and Brooklyn and enjoy their time together. Honestly she was a pretty bad influence and always had junk food for all of them to share or get take out with them. She was really happy when Ashley started driving because that meant even more take out.

She was a daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, mother, grandmother, friend, a trusted confidant. She loved spending time visiting or talking on the phone for many hours with her sisters, family, friends, her daughter, and granddaughters. She had a wicked sense of humour, warm loving kind heart of gold and meant so much to so many people. We will all miss her dearly.

Ginie’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration Of Life Service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Saskatchewan Lutheran Church out in the Langham rural community. There will be beverages and goodies served following the service. We encourage everyone to please come prepared to share a photo, a memory or a funny story with everyone.

Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

A lovely send off for our friend. So many obituaries are short and to the point. This was very personal and Ginie deserved and earned every single word and kudo! Thanks for sharing, Cherie.

My condolences to all of Ginie’s family. Carol and Earl: I fondly remember all the times Ginie and I played together and shared stories as teenagers when Ginie stayed at your place on Ave J in Saskatoon. We had loads of great times and great laughs! ❤

    Cherie, Steve & Family, Joan & Carol;
Our thoughts are with all of you during this time. Ginie will always hold a special place in our hearts. She was a very dear friend and we spent many hours with her. Our long talks, lots of laughs and tears. There were many suppers together and Christmas was always special. It was an all day, late into the night eating feast! Our love for animals runs deep and she had many stories to tell. We always considered her “Our Mom” We would spend hours on the phone talking about everything and anything! She was one of the kindest, loving people and we are so glad she was a part of our lives. Keep her memories close to your heart.
