Gerhard Paul Polan

July 11, 1925 – March 6, 2022

Gerhard Paul Polan, age 96, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, passed away March 6th, 2022 at his care home from natural causes.

Gerhard was born in 1925 in Herne, Germany. He immigrated to Canada landing in the ship named the M.S. Italia at Halifax’s Pier 21, with his pregnant wife and two children in 1956. Bound for Winnipeg, they arrived to find no work. Fortunately, they were quickly sponsored by the German Baptist Church in Saskatoon. Gerhard was soon employed in his learned trade as a carpenter and cabinet maker.  Gerhard and Hannelore became members of Avalon Emmanuel Baptist Church and later Emmanuel Baptist Church in their new location.  Gerhard was instrumental in building the kitchen cabinets in the multipurpose room addition.  The family moved to Asquith to start his own cabinet building shop there and eventually moved to Dalmeny in his retirement to be closer to family.  Gerhard also took residence in Radisson and Borden.

Gerhard enjoyed listening to music from speaker cabinets of his own design.  He enjoyed playing the mandolin along with vinyl recordings from large mandolin choirs in Germany. In later years, Gerhard embraced digital camera technology and could be found driving around central Saskatchewan with his dog, Teddy, looking to talk to people and take pictures of lakes and sunsets.

Gerhard Polan is survived by five children, their spouses, 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hannalore of 45 years, two sisters, and his son, Thomas Polan.

A private memorial service for family will be held in his honor in Okotoks, Alberta.

Memorial donations can be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church (Seniors Care Ministry), 1636 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7H 5H7.

Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.
