Herman Janzen
November 27, 1948 – January 24, 2022
Herman Janzen was born in Hague on November 27, 1948 to Herman & Annie Janzen. Dad lived in Gruenthal, SK where he started school in grade 1. A year later the family moved to the farm where he attended Altona School. Dad left school to help out on the farm.
In 1968 Dad worked at a car wash in Saskatoon where he met mom (Dorothy Giesbrecht). The neighbor boy, Jake, asked mom if she would like to work at the car wash. She didn’t drive and there was a problem with dad’s car so they caught a ride with Jake. Dad was pretty shy and Jake told mom on their way to work one morning that Herman would like to go out with her. She didn’t believe him but dad confirmed it and their dating began. They were married on October 10, 1970. In their time of marriage they had two children Lisa Gratton (Janzen) and Keith Janzen.
Dad worked at the Inco Mine in Thompson, MB for 5 years when the kids were little. He loved to ride his bike down to the river with one of the kids in the carrier seat in his bike. Many times the whole family would go down to the river and enjoy french fries, hamburgers and hot dogs. On occasion they would take a trip to Pisew Falls to view the water falls.
Mom and dad moved their family back to Martensville, SK where dad concentrated working in the construction industry, starting out in concrete working with his brother Peter and Bill, then working with brother Dan subcontracting framing houses and later working for his brother Henry at Janzen Steel Buildings in 1991.
Dad loved to do leather work in his spare time and build furniture in the garage. Family members would ask him to build china cabinets, curio cabinets, tables, coffee tables, and hope chests. Lisa remembers helping her dad from time to time. He also loved to attend the stock car races at Bridge City Speedway and watch the monster trucks at Sask Place. He had a love for gardening, especially tomatoes.
Mom and dad were married for 25 years and lived in Dalmeny. Dad later met Barbara Bueckert and they were married on August 9, 1996. It was during the time they were together dad’s health deteriorated. He developed lung cancer which he overcame. He then was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder). Dad and Barb were married approximately 25 years.
He moved in with daughter Lisa and son-in-law Dave, where he was looked after until moving into the Langham Care Home on November 1, 2021.
It was January 24, 2022 at approximately 11:00pm when he passed away peacefully.
He leaves behind his two children Lisa (David) Gratton and Keith Janzen; his 10 siblings Peter (Barb) Janzen, Nettie (Henry) Dyck, Bill (Anne) Janzen, Dan (Nellie) Janzen, Henry (Marlene) Janzen, Helen (Fred) Pauls, Carl (Bonnie) Janzen, Eva (Ernie) Janzen, Barbara (Dennis) Reimer, Dave (Shirley) Janzen; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Herman and Annie Janzen, 4 nieces, and 1 great niece.
A special thanks to the staff at the Langham Care Home for the excellent care he received during his stay there.
An invite only Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 10:00am at Dalmeny Funeral Home.
Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.
