Norma Amson

Norma Amson

July 7, 1927 – April 2, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norma Jean Amson of Radisson Saskatchewan on April 2, 2021.  Mom was born on the homestead NE,1/2 30-3-17-2  in Lake Alma on July 7, 1927 to Amanda and Melvin Thue (Ma and Pa).  She was the fifth of 10 children and one of 4 girls. She was counted on by her mother to help with chores and look after her younger brothers and sisters.

These are mom’s own words: as the oldest girl in the family I was taught to accept responsibilities very early in life.  I learned to bake big batches of bread when I was 12 years old.  I also cared for my brothers and sisters after school-carrying them on my hips, diapering them, and reading stories to them.

I worked for my room in board at Frank Bolton’s in Radville and attended Radville High School.   At 18, just out of high school there was a shortage of teachers, so in July 1945, I went to normal school in Moose Jaw for 6 weeks and was teaching in September 1945 at little Glenn Curren school 25 miles from home.  The next summer after taking 8 more weeks of normal school, I was credited with 2 years of training.

I loved teaching and taught in various schools during those 20 years: Glenn Curren, Van Allstine, Lake Alma, Riceton, Grand Coulee, Haultain School in Regina, Middle Valley, Radville and finally Radisson.

I came to Radisson in 1956 to teach at the school and it was there in Radisson where I met Jim Amson. We fell in the love and were married on February 20, 1957.  Our first son Bradley was born on August 13, 1958 and this was closely followed by our second son, Blake born on July 30, 1960.  I taught at the Radisson School for many years and Jim and the boy’s ran a Feedlot and worked on farm land that we purchased over the years.  My younger sister Myrtle married Jims brother Jack and we had a very good life and enjoyed all the people in Radisson and the surrounding areas.

Mom was known as a fixture in the Radisson  community being very active in the annual agricultural fair and always having a garden and flowers in her yard and house.  She enjoyed feeding her birds in the wintertime and enjoyed bicycling until the age of 90. She was also a wonderful baker, quilter and crocheter.

Mom had great faith in God. Her friends in her faith community were very dear to her and all her life, she was a faithful servant of God.  It was her family, friends, community and faith that gave her great comfort and joy in life.

She is predeceased by her husband James (September 15, 1996); her son Blake (May 9, 2015); and eight siblings including sister Myrtle Amson of Radisson on April 4, 2019.   She is survived by her son Bradley (Kathi) and grandchildren – Meghan (Kevin), Caitlin (Derek),Kerry (Andy), Laura (Neil), Haley (Nicholas),Victoria(David) and Leah. She is survived by Donna Neufeldt (Blake) and grandchildren Janelle and James. She had seven great grandchildren Melody, Sophia, Eleanor, Maria, Freyja, Weston and Brooklyn and one more expected.  Survived also by sister Donna (Don) Dogapol.

Mom we are going to miss you dearly.  It will not be the same without you.  Your wisdom, independence, kindness, genuine interest and love in your fellow man is manifested in those you came after you. We take inspiration from your life.

The family would like to thank the nurses and physicians that have helped mom these last couple years.  Dr. Lois Stewart, and Dr. Suzanne Harriman most recently.   Thanks to special friends Phyllis Blakeny and Susan Penner.

Memorial donations to the First Responders in Radisson are graciously accepted. Box 286, Radisson, SK S0K 3L0.

An invitation only Funeral will take place on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 2:00 pm.

Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

It was a shock and feeling of greaat loss to hear of dear Norma’s passing. We are thankful for her faithfulness to God, and to us all. Until Covid-19 shut things down she drove in from Raddison every Wednesday afternoon to Saskatoon for a Bible Study meeting in my front room. She was 93 years old at the time. Norma really never experience old age, so it was a blessing she departed to her eternal home when she did. We will miss her greatly and feel for the family in their loss. May God remember ever one of us that we might also depart in victory as Norma did. I have know Norma for most of my 80 years. She was always a cheery blessing. May our last end be like her’s. Norma was a marvel and precious to us all. She will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of Norma’s company for several hours at the last Radisson Fair that I attended (I think it was in 2018). My parents had been gone for 10 years by then and we were both missing their company. I treasure the memory of our conversation that day. RIP Norma.

I have nothing but good and wholesome memories of Norma while in their home or in meeting at North Battleford, Saskatoon or Mullingar. After going to Brazil in a mission many letters came from Norma during those years. When a person comes to this point in life I would like to be as well prepared in heart and spirit for that eternal home as our friend Norma was. Sympathy to the Amson and Thue famillies.

Today as I spoke to each of my siblings, Karen, Brian, and Stuart, of the passing of Norma, the same response was shared. “She was like a second mother to me.” How this ecchoed through all of us!

As neighbours, united in raising young families, living close together, a strong friendship grew and formed a special bond through the years. Norma shared in our triumphs and hardships with always a good word and a no-nonsense show of support. She will be dearly missed by all of the Scott clan. Our condolences to Brad & Kathi, and all of the Amson clan.

Norma always spoke with her spirit and never with her nature. She was the favorite aunt that always had time and a kind word .We have indeed been blessed.

  • Richard Widdifield Posted April 8, 2021 1:53 pm

It is with profound sadness and many tears that I mark the passing of a dear friend. Over the past twenty years Norma has been an enduring light of kindness to both Sandra and myself, but especially so for me over the past decade when I have often struggled day to day to go on while trying my best to deal with the gradual and painful loss of my dear Sandra, which continues to this day. But I also know that my situation is not unique and that Norma has similarly been a source of inspiration and hope throughout her life to many others both within her own family and also within a very wide community of friends whose lives have equally been blessed by her loving, caring, gentle spirit. From the bottom of all of our hearts, we thank you Norma. Rest in Peace dear friend. You are loved.

  • Doug & Joan Beach Posted April 8, 2021 2:05 pm

We knew Norma as a connection of the Thue’s & our faith in God..
Her spontaneous big smile warm hugs and interest in us all was heart warming.

She will truly be missed by her loving family and many friends.

  • Levonne Thue Posted April 8, 2021 7:18 pm

Remembering a dear sister in law. Thankful for the relationship that developed between Arvie and I and Norma. We made many trips up to Radisson to visit. We will never forget you. – all the times we laughed and cried together. It was a very close relationship all our married years. We will never forget the times we spent visiting you and Jim in your home, which will be no more. I remember when Arvid and I got engaged. You and Arvid were very close and were together a lot. When you learned that we were engaged, you said to Arvie – “Now, what am I going to do?” All in fun of course! Condolences to the rest of the family! Norma will be missed by all of us!

  • Irene Larson Posted April 8, 2021 8:51 pm

Norma was my grade two teacher at Middle Valley school. She rode home with us many a time, with the horses and wagon to spend the night. We kids felt so privileged to bring our teacher home with us. Also remember our North Battleford and Radisson days. Many good times spent together. Sympathy to the family connections. Alvin & Irene

  • Karin Singbeil (Kaul) Posted April 9, 2021 11:07 am

I was saddened to hear that Norma had passed away. My heartfelt condolences to Brad and his family, and all of those who loved her.
I remember Norma from my youth in Radisson, as my mother’s cherished friend and my high school English teacher. She taught with a passion for literature, bringing Shakespeare’s stories to life, instilling my love for Shakespeare. I always admired her teaching skills and professionalism in the classroom.
As an adult I ran into Norma in Radisson a couple of times, at “The Fair”. What a welcoming lady, making me feel like an old friend after being away for so many years, and what an enthusiastic ambassador for the town!
I think of Norma frequently when I ride my bike, and tell my friends about the lady from Radisson who rode her bike well into her 90s. I’d like to think of her now riding her bike in heaven, along the smooth and peaceful pavement with a basket of blessings in her carrier.

I got to know Jim & Norma and Blake while working in the North Battleford area for 3 years. Now Bryan and I live in Fort Nelson and every trip to Saskatchewan we would connect with Norma. Sometimes just by phone, sometimes a short visit , sometimes overnight. She loved life and had many good days. Thinking of those closest to her and your feeling of loss.

    Love Joyce

  • Don and Sandy Ewing Posted April 10, 2021 1:36 pm

Thoughts go back to North Battleford and Radisson days when Norma and Brad and Blake would be there faithfully.
My heart went out to you, Brad seeing your grief! Good to see the next generation with an understanding of Grandma’s heart!

Brad and family. Our thoughts and condolences have gone your way again these past days since hearing of your Moms passing. Think of missing her bubbling personality here at Aylesbury for many years. Also the good memories we have when growing up and visiting in those early years. Thankful for her infectious inspiration.
