Alan Buckley

Alan Buckley

February 5, 1951 – February 27, 2021

Alan was born in Maidstone, SK to Art and Jessie Buckley, the third of five siblings. Throughout his life, family and friends were of the utmost importance to Alan, including his best friend and wife Pat, their daughters, extended family and close friends.

During his childhood, Alan was active in 4H and various sports including hockey, fastball and golf. At the age of 17, Alan moved to Saskatoon to attend the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan. Alan met his wife Pat in 1977 and they were married on June 17, 1978. The following year, Alan and Pat moved to Medicine Hat, AB where Alan worked as the Director of Pharmacy. In 1985, the opportunity to return home to Saskatchewan presented itself when Alan was offered the Director of Pharmacy role at Saskatoon City Hospital. Alan later pursued a Masters in Health Administration and enjoyed roles in a wide variety of health care fields including medical affairs, lab services and home care.

Alan always enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends. Summer holidays were often spent camping at provincial parks across Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. An especially memorable family adventure was a truly cross-country camping trip – all the way to the Maritimes and back in 1994. Alan’s other outdoor hobbies included gardening, golfing, canoeing, cross-country skiing and cycling. Retirement provided Alan the opportunity to explore these pastimes in new ways. He and Pat enjoyed numerous cycling holidays in Canada, the US and Europe. They also enjoyed many rounds of golf at Silver Lake near Alan’s hometown of Maidstone. Without question though, their most frequent destination was Calgary to visit their children and grandchildren. Alan had a firm faith in God, was actively involved in his church and looked for practical opportunities to serve others.

Alan died peacefully on February 27, 2021, two months following a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma. His family would like to express their gratitude to his family physician, Dr. Cyprian Enweani, for the medical care he provided throughout Alan’s life.

Alan is lovingly remembered by his wife Patricia of 42 years and their daughters: Michelle Seymour (Brendyn), Laura Arnold (Erik) and Jennifer Thomson (Rory); grandchildren: Kedrick and Aiden Seymour, Claire Arnold and Calum Thomson. He is also survived by his sisters: Marilyn Wood (Jim), Janice McConnell (Barry) and Alison Morin as well as his sister-in-law Sandy Wiltermuth (Terry) and brothers-in-law: Bob Taylor (Madeleine King) and Ron Dedman. He was predeceased by his brother Don Buckley.

A private Celebration of Alan’s life will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Grove Community Church.

The family will dedicate a bench in Alan’s memory along the Meewasin Trail. Those wishing to contribute may contact the Meewasin Valley Authority to make a memorial donation in Alan’s name: https://meewasin.com/donate/.

Arrangements entrusted to Dalmeny Funeral Home 306-254-2022.

    Hi Pat,
We were shocked when we read of Alan’s passing. Our condolences to you.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
I have been in the book of Revelation the last while, and am struck by the promise of life beyond death. Very relevant words from Jesus are found in Rev 1:17-18, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death…”
The scriptural promise is that there is more to be anticipated…there is life beyond.

Pat and Family. Our deepest sympathies on the tragic and sudden loss of Alan. Both Sharon and I mentored Alan as an undergraduate in Hospital Pharmacy and followed his career for over 40 years. Alan was truly a great person in all aspects both professional and personal. I was so please when your family came back to Saskatoon in 1985 to take over and join the legacy of Saskatoon City Hospital leaders. Alan contributed more to healthcare in Saskatoon than most people realize. It was our great pleasure to know him and work with him over many years. He will be sadly missed.

  • Brenda Thiessen Posted March 5, 2021 11:17 am
