Mary Griffiths

January 10, 1918 – January 31, 2021

Mary Cornelia Griffiths (nee Block) passed away to be with her Lord the morning of January 31st in the Villa of Bethany Manor in Saskatoon.

Mary was born to John and Cornelia Block in No. 9 Village, Orenberg, Russia on January 10th, 1918. The family came to Canada in 1926 to escape the chaos in Russia due to the Communist Revolution. Mary grew up in Manitoba and Hepburn, SK. She finally completed her high school at age 27 and went on to teach in many one room country schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta. She returned to the University of Saskatchewan to get a Bachelors degree in Home Economics and went on to teach in the Abbotsford Senior High School until she retired.

Mary was a woman of deep faith and was always active in the church where she lived. Her faith found expression in her serving for two years in Okinawa and a summer in Northern Manitoba with MCC. She also taught many home Bible studies. Mary met Jack Griffiths and a courtship began as they were both looking to purchase a car. They were married in 1990. It was a truly delightful marriage with a lot of laughter and joy.

Mary was predeceased by her husband William John (Jack) Griffiths and her parents John and Cornelia Block, as well as siblings Cornelia (Nelly) Rinas, Margaret Dyck Gerlach, David Block, John Block, Abram Block, Jacob Block and Anne Harder. She was also predeceased by in-laws: Ed Rinas , Anton Dyck, Herb Gerlach, Arley Harder, Edward Loewen, Christina Block, Natalie Block, Helen Block. She is survived by two brothers and a sister: Henry and (Susan) Block, Katrina (Tina) Loewen and Peter and (Arlene) Block, as well as, sisters-in-law: Mary Harder and Agnes Block. She is also survived by step-children Irene (Ben) Potter, David (Leah) Griffiths as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be a family only Graveside Service Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

Mary was an aunt who went beyond…any of her neices and nephews who went to Bible School at Colombia in Abbotsford, found her home to be their ‘home away from home’, for laundry, lunch, help with shopping, and a place to relax. Her world travels to see family, included trips to India, Ethiopia, Nepal, Thailand. Having her pick me up from Ethiopia when I graduated from HS, and take me home with her, a very special gift! Missing you, Aunt Mary.
