Leona Peters
February 28, 1932 – January 3, 2021
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Leona (Nickel) Peters of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the age of 88.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Sharon (Jim) Block, Loren (Debbie) Peters, Glen Peters, Stan (Ev) Peters, and Don (Deb) Peters; and her 14 grandchildren; and her 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister Ruth Nickel and her brother Waldo Nickel.
Leona was predeceased by Jake Peters, her loving husband of 55 years, in October 2008. She was also predeceased by her parents Jake and Helen Nickel; and her siblings Bertha, Sam, Dave, Victor, and Cliff.
A daughter of immigrant parents, Leona Marie Nickel was born on the farm at Borden, Saskatchewan on February 26, 1932, the 6th of 8 children.
The Nickel family was actively involved in the local Mennonite Brethren church. It was there that Leona dedicated herself to Jesus at the age of 7, and remained actively involved in her faith and church for the rest of her life. She also attended Bethany Bible Institute at Hepburn, Saskatchewan for 2 years. After marriage, in 1959 Jake and Leona became deacons in their church, and served in that capacity for decades. Leona was musical, and employed her musical talents at church and elsewhere by regularly singing in a trio, leading the church choir, and in many other ways.
Like her father, Leona was quite extroverted and enjoyed social connections. She conducted Bible studies in nearby towns and with Jake was actively involved in Borden’s Farmers Market. Whether through her baking, her Bible studies, or any number of her social activities, Leona made many friends.
Leona kept a huge vegetable and flower garden and adored her many flowers. Countless hours were given to, with the help of Jake and the kids, gardening, shelling peas, baking, making music, playing games and doing puzzles, and much more.
Many people will recall her signature cheerful phone greeting, “Halo!”
The Peters family always enjoyed long road trip holidays, and also regular annual involvement in closer-to-home endeavours such as Big River Bible Camp.
In 2004, Jake and Leona moved from the farm at Borden to Saskatoon, and retired. During their retirement years, Jake and Leona enjoyed more long road trips together with close friends. And they loved their involvement with family, especially as the numbers of grandchildren and great-grandchildren grew.
The sun always shone around Leona. Her positive smiling nature endeared many people to her. Her infectious love of her Creator will always be her legacy. She will be genuinely missed and lovingly remembered.
A public come and go viewing will be on January 9, 2021, 11:00am – 12:00pm. at West Portal Church, 3134 33rd Street West, Saskatoon, SK. We will miss Leona at FGCC services and seniors. Our condolences to the family. Your Mom was such a special lady.
Sharon , siblings and families- our deepest sympathy to you all on the passing of your Mom. She always had a smile and hello ; she was so very easy to visit with and her community involvement was missed when they moved from Borden. We know she will be greatly missed by family and friends.
We express our deepest sympathies to all of you. Of course we have most memories from many years ago in the MB Church at Borden. Her positive disposition was always evident. She had lots of energy. When we told Marguarite Golding about Leona’s passing, she recalled sports meets where her twin sister and Leona were always fierce competitors. She said they were referred to as triplets, all with February birthdays.
We feel bad for you all that because of COVID-19, not everyone can be together. We would have liked to see you all and have a good visit. Take care.
So sorry for your loss Jim and Sharon and family. Leona was a wonderful blessing to us when we were pastoring in Borden. She was welcoming and hospitable (we remember her dropping off her renowned chocolate cream pies at our house). As part of the church leadership (deacons) Jake and Leona expressed care and love for many in the church and community. She will be remembered as a godly and gracious lady. We pray God’s comfort and grace surround her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and that her legacy of godliness will flow from generation to generation.
May your family all be comforted. My best memory of Leona is of her organizing and leading a teen girl’s singing group in connection with our MB church in Borden. We sang in three parts and when I hear some of those songs I still think of Leona and the effort she put into this. I really enjoyed those times singing together. I remember one winter evening she was driving us home after practicing and we (safely) made a doughnut on the country road.
So sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. Found memories and lots of laughs shared as we sang in choir together. Sorry for Covid that I can’t be there in person to hug you all.
Leona will never be forgotten. She was a prayer warrior and fervent in her prayers. Her dedication to the Lord and church and family will always be remembered, as well as her winning smiles and words of encouragement. Our prayers are with you all at this time. Peter & Mary Thiessen
Our sympathies go out to the Peters family. Watching the tributes, its evident that your Mom and Grandma was an amazing lady who loved you all. Special hugs (from Jo!) goes out to Stan and Don. It was good to see you, we wish we could have been there in person to support you.

What wonderful memories I have of your mom. She shared wholeheartedly in whatever she did. Thanks for the pictures etc on line. Hugs, too.
We have wonderful memories of both of your parents. We enjoyed them as neighbours when we lived at Borden. Our condolences to the family.
You had a beautiful memorial service today.

We are sorry for the loss of such a special lady to many but even more so to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always smiling and willing to visit wherever and whenever. Just such a welcoming, friendly lady that won’t be forgotten. We are thinking of you all. Diane and Lee Tracksell
We want to give our condolences to the family. Leon worked together with Leona, when he attended Bethany Bible Institute and was involved in going to Borden church for their kids club. It was always a enjoyable experience working together with Leona. We also got together with them when they lived in Saskatoon. She was always a joy to talk to!
My sympathy to you Sharon and Jim and family on the passing of your mother.
