John Fehr

May 12, 1932 – December 12, 2019

John J. Fehr was born on May 12, 1932 on a farm located 4 miles east of Hague, SK. He was the sixth of fifteen children. Having lived a full life, at the age of 87 he suffered a stroke, and passed away peacefully on December 12, 2019 at the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home. As a young boy, John experienced the difficult and labour intensive life on prairie farms, which included harrowing fields with a team of horses at age seven. As a young man, he left home to join several siblings in Ontario where he found employment at the General Motors plant in St. Catherines. After two years he returned to Saskatoon where he lived with two sisters while working at the Robin Hood Flour Mill, and Coop Creamery. During this time he attended Mayfair Mennonite Church where he was attracted to a young woman named Eva Siemens. They were married on October 14, 1956, after which they settled on a farm near Herschel, SK. Here they lived for more than forty years. In 1973 when their oldest child turned sixteen, the family began spending winters at Caronport, SK so that John could study at Briercrest Bible College. After four years he graduated with a Bachelor of Religious Education degree. During these years, the family returned to Herschel for seeding and harvest times and benefited greatly from the help of John’s brother Dave who managed the farm operation in their absence. John loved the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was known for his generous spirit, sense of humour, and his deep and practical Christian faith. Always active in Herschel Ebenfeld Mennonite Church, he enjoyed singing in choirs, occasional preaching and serving several terms as deacon. In addition, he served as a longtime member of the board of Ranger Lake Bible Camp. In later years, hearing impairment prompted him to reduce his volunteer activities. Their retirement years were spent in Warman, SK. He is survived by his wife Eva; children Dianne (Henry Wiebe), Lois (Bruce Guenther), Marjorie (Daryl Grant), Wesley Fehr, and Calvin (Laurie) Fehr; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; siblings Eva Parker, Ann Dyck, Bill (Lillian) Fehr, Marge (Herman), Pete (Nora) Fehr, Dave (Grace) Fehr, and Jake (Dorothy) Fehr. He was predeceased by parents John I. Fehr and Maria (Hamm); siblings Corny, Isaac, Helen Isaac, Tena Hase, Mary Unger, Henry, and Martin; and granddaughter Lindsay Fehr. We would like to thank Staff at RUH, Dalmeny Spruce Manor Special Care Home and Warman Mennonite Special Care Home for the care of our Dad over the last 7 months. Viewing will be Sunday, December 22, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Dalmeny Funeral Home, 139 3rd Street, Dalmeny.
