Rueben Friesen was born April 28, 1928, to Henry J. and Katherina (Peters) Friesen, in Langham, SK, the 14th of 15 children. Theirs was a Christian home, where prayer, Bible reading, and church attendance at South Bruderthaler Brethren Church (now Langham Evangelical Bible Church) were routines. There he confessed faith in Christ and was baptized in 1945. Rueben attended Tabor Bible Institute in Dalmeny, SK, where a representative of Gospel Missionary Union (now Avant) presented a need for teachers in French Sudan. Following Bible school and mission training, he left for Africa via Switzerland, where he met Matilda (Millie) Elias. They married in Bamako, Mali, on Feb. 24, 1954, and had three children: Dorothy, Karon and Paul. During their second term Millie was diagnosed with cancer, to which she succumbed in 1964 while back in Canada. On Dec. 30, 1964, Rueben married Elizabeth (Betty) Wiebe and the family returned to Mali in 1965. Dwight was born to them in 1966. Together they engaged in literacy programs, education, and literature production and distribution, training indigenous church leaders for Mali’s evangelical churches. In 1991 they retired to Sidney, MB, and moved to Bethany Manor, Saskatoon, in 2005. Rueben is survived by: Betty, his beloved wife of 50 years; their children, Dorothy (Cyril) Stephenson, Karon (Harvey) Mathies, Paul Friesen, Dwight (Denise) Friesen and families; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren); and sister Martha.
