Paul Henry Friesen was born in Saskatoon on January 20, 1956, to Henry and Olga Friesen. Paul was a quiet, thoughtful child who enjoyed collecting baseball cards, reading, and playing in the school band, as well as singing in the church choir. He had a great throwing arm and enjoyed playing the outfield. At sixteen, he made his commitment to Christ public when he was baptized at the Dalmeny Mennonite Brethren Church. Paul was a diligent and capable student. From a class of many gifted students, Paul’s teachers chose him to participate in the Young Voyageurs program, in which he travelled to the Maritimes.
After graduating from Dalmeny High School, Paul attended Bethany Bible College for a year, then took a year of courses at the University of Saskatchewan. But it was when he helped his Dad build a new house that Paul discovered his lifelong love of carpentry. He was a respected sub-contractor in the construction industry for many years.
On July 28, 1979, Paul married Debbie Fehr. They settled in Dalmeny, and two children, Melissa René and Landon Paul, were born to them. In 1997, Paul moved his family to a country acreage, and enjoyed living in this quiet retreat. After the children had left home, Debbie and Paul moved to Saskatoon, where Paul beautifully finished their new home.
Becoming a grandfather was a thrill for Paul. He spent many hours playing games with his beloved grandchildren, making up stories for them, and walking to the “treat store”.
Paul was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2016. On June 10, 2017, Paul passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He is survived by Debbie, his loving wife of 37 years; his daughter Melissa (Grant Biebrick) and their children, Jonah, Annika, and Elijah; his son Landon; his parents Henry and Olga Friesen; his brothers Randy (Verla) and Chris (Elaine) and families; his sisters Cathy (Craig), Jennie, Colleen (Keith), and Teresa (Stan) and families; his mother-in-law Helen Ulrich; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Connie (Marvin), Ed (Valerie), and Marilyn (Jerry) and families. Paul was predeceased by his father-in-law Dave Fehr, and his sister-in-law Connie Warkentin.
Paul’s Funeral will be held on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at Emmanuel Baptist Church, at the corner of Acadia and Taylor in Saskatoon.
